According to the Islamic tradition, Sanli-Urfa is the birthplace of Abraham. That’s the reason why the city is one of the important sanctuaries of the islamic world. In Urfa you can meet groups of religious Iranian women on their pilgrimage to the holy places of the Shi’a Islam in nearby Syria. As far as the atmosphere of the city is concerned Sanliurfa is more a Syrian city than a Turkish one. It also has a very lively bazaar. In the nice park you will find a huge pond with “holy” carp. The city also has an impressive citadel.
