The setting of Mardin is rather spectacular, situated on a hill with a breathtaking view over the Mesopotamian plain into Syria, and on clear days even into Iraq. The city itself consists of myriads of small alleys. The architecture of most of the buildings is more Arabic than Ottoman. Mardin is home of the oldest medresse in Turkey.(pics 333-337)
