Until 1937 this monastery was the residence of the patriarch of Antioch, the head of the Syrian-Orthodox church. It was founded in the 12th century. It’s believed that there has been a monastery before that time, but no proof of that has been found. Under the basements of the monastery a Sun-temple was discovered (pic 372) of unknown date.
