Neptunus takes Series lead
Nederlands
ROTTERDAM (Neth.) - It took more than four hours, but DOOR Neptunus Thursday-evening defeated Mr. Cocker HCAW 5-1 in Game Three of the best-of-five Holland Series to take a 2-1 lead. Game Four will be played next Saturday in Bussum. When Neptunus wins, it will again be the champions. When HCAW wins, Game Five will be played on Sunday in Rotterdam.
It was a tumultuous game, which was interrupted for a total of one hour and 38 minutes because of rain and a bench-clearing brawl.
The game started at 7:48 PM and ended one minute after midnight. It proved (again) that it is almost impossible to play night games in the Holland Series, as most players, coaches and game officials have a regular job during day-time. Because of heavy traffic, it took some participants (players, umpires, press) one-and-a-half hour to two hours to reach the stadium in Rotterdam. Besides that, a long night game like today's cannot be covered, because of newspapers deadlines. Television coverage was done with excerpts, but the sports show was unable to announce the final score, as it ended before the game did. Luckily, tonights game didn't produce the champion yet. So, clubs might consider a different schedule for upcoming seasons, as these games of course also have promotional values.
While there were be sunny periods during the day, it had rained the night before and rain also was expected later in the day. Nevertheless, after a brief rain shower late in the afternoon, the game started as scheduled, but has to be stopped in the top of the fourth inning because of rain. After a 1:23 hour rain-delay, the game resumed and could be completed.

HCAW opened the score in the second inning off of starter Rob Cordemans, just as they did in the opener on Saturday in Rotterdam.
With Rodney Michel (bunt-single, stolen base) on second base and two outs, Cordemans lost his control and walks three batters in a row to give HCAW a 1-0 lead. A strikeout ended the at bat and Cordemans recovered, as he struckout ten and gave up six hits in the eight innings he pitched.

In the top of the fourth inning, Nick Fridsma doubled for HCAW with one out, while its started to rain. After a pop-out, Dimitri Leon had a 2-2 count when the umpire crew stopped the game, as it started raining harder. The moment to interrupt the game might be strange, but the umps opted for safety of the participants.
While it appeared that the game was to be canceled, it eventually became dry and after a delay of one hour and 23 minutes it was resumed. Rob Cordemans returned to the mound and needed only one pitch to strike out Leon and end the inning.

In the home fourth, Jurjen van Zijl also returned to the mound for HCAW. He had pitched three hitless innings and allowed only one batter to reach base on a walk in the third after retiring the first eight batters in order.
In the fourth, he walked Raily Legito with one out. HCAW then made some defensive changes, also replacing catcher Nick Fridsma, who was hit by a foul ball two pitches earlier. Legito then stole second and scored the tying run when Harvey Monte tripled to deep left-centerfield. Monte himself was able to score on a throwing error towards third base.

In the sixth inning, Neptunus added a run when Raily Legito scored on a wild pitch with the bases loaded.
An intentional walk re-loaded the bases, after which Van Zijl was relieved by Nick Stuifbergen. He saw Roel Koolen hit into an inning-ending double play.

Things went out of hand in the bottom of the seventh inning. With two outs and a full count on Melfried Comenencia, a time-out was called, but Nick Stuifbergen completed his wind-up and hit Comenencia with a pitch. On that, Evert-Jan 't Hoen charged the mound from the Neptunus dug-out and a bench-clearing brawl erupted in which some real punches were thrown. Stuifbergen and 't Hoen were ejected, as was HCAW's first baseman Rodney Michel. The game resumed after a 15-minute delay.

In the home eighth, Neptunus added two more runs off of Jeroen Hubert, who had relieved Stuifbergen. Raily Legito led off with a double and Harvey Monte walked and scored on a 2-out double by Roel Koolen to make it 5-1.

HCAW outhit Neptunus 6-4, including two singles by Ronald Jaarsma, who didn't had a basehit in his previous eight Holland Series-games. His last basehit was registered in Game 3 of the 2003 Series.
