Neptunus ties Series with shutout
Nederlands
BUSSUM (Neth.) - DOOR Neptunus evened the best-of-five Holland Series on Sunday with a 7-0 shutout vs. Mr. Cocker HCAW. Game Three will be played next Thursday at Rotterdam and starts at 7:45 PM. A Live Play-by-Play will be available again of that game.

Winning pitcher Diegomar Markwell went the distance and pitched a 3-hit shutout. The lefthander needed 109 pitches to complete the game and had only thrown 89 after eight innings.
The 3-hitter by Markwell was the best low-hitting complete game performance by a pitcher since HCAW-pitcher Jurriaan Lobbezoo pitched a 9-inning, 2-hitter in a 4-0 shutout on September 26, 1999 vs. Neptunus. Last year, Eelco Jansen (Neptunus) gave up only one basehit vs. HCAW, but didn't complete the game, as he was relieved after 8 1/3 inning.
The complete game 9-inning shutout by Markwell is only the sixth in 71 Holland Series-games so far.

Markwell struckout only two batters and walked four, but never ran into problems, as no HCAW-runner reached second base!
Markwell was supported by good defense, who turned three double plays. But HCAW also made some fine defensive plays and turned a record-tying five double plays this afternoon. On September 21, 2003, Neptunus also turned five double plays vs. HCAW. The eight double plays are a single game Holland Series-record. The previous record was six, also established by HCAW and Neptunus, who did its twice. Both turned three on September 27, 1998. On September 21, 2003, HCAW added one to the five Neptunus made.

Neptunus collected 13 basehits off of four different pitchers, who were unable to stop the Rotterdam-offense. Maikel Benner went 3-for-4.

Neptunus opened the score with two runs in the second inning.
With runners on first and second, HCAW-starter Jos de Jong gave up an RBI-double to Roel Koolen and was relieved by Jeroen Hubert, who saw an inherited runner score on a grounder, but didn't gave up runs himself in the four innings he pitched.

In the sixth inning, Nick Stuifbergen became HCAW's third pitcher, but the righthander was hit hard. Stuifbergen gave up a lead-off double to Evert-Jan 't Hoen, a one-out RBI-double to Maikel Benner and an RBI-single to Melfried Comenencia, before being lifted for Loek van Mil.
With runners on first and second, Van Mil faced Dirk van 't Klooster, who hit an RBI-single to rightfield, but when rightfielder Bas de Jong misplayed the ball and let it roll all the way to the fence, everyone scored, including Van 't Klooster himself to increase the lead to 7-0.
In this inning, Jeroen Sluijter scored the 700th run in Holland Series-history.
