Hans Arp was born in Alsace and educated at Strasbourg, Weimar
and Paris. In 1912 he went to Munich, met Kandinsky and became
a member of the Blaue Reiter group. In 1913 he was involved
with the expressionist publication 'Der Sturm'. At Zürich he
was one of the founders of the Cabaret Voltaire and also a member
of the local Dada movement. In 1926 he went to live at Meudon
and from then on he worked mainly as a sculptor. He stated that
his sculptures were 'concrete' and not 'abstract'. Arp left France because of the germans in 1942, but after the war he returned to Meudon. In 1949 and 1950 he visited the USA.
