With Ben Nicholson and Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth was the
most important exponent of a new approach to abstract sculpture
in Europe in the 1930s. She was educated at Leeds and London, where she became friends with Henry Moore at the Royal College of Art. In 1924 she went to Italy to study painting and sculpture. She married Ben Nicholson and they knew people like Picasso, Arp, Mondriaan and Brancusi. She won many international prizes and was created Dame of the British Empire in 1965.
