Andrew Lusk was the son of John Lusk and Margaret Earl. When he was 25 years old, he started a wholesale grocery company in Greenock together with his brother Robert. In 1840 he went to London where he became a dealer in groceries for export and later in ships' stores. On 24 October 1848 he married Eliza Potter (1826-1910) from Falkirk. Later he was a director of the Imperial Bank in Lothbury from its foundation in 1862 until it was incorporated with the London Joint Stock Bank in 1893. He was also the chairman of the General Fire and Life Assurance Company for many years. In 1857 he was elected common council member for Aldgate ward and in 1863 alderman of Aldgate. On 29 September 1873 he became Lord Mayor of London and on 4 August 1874 he received a baronetcy. On 3 July 1865 he was elected as MP for Finsbury for the Liberal Party. He held his seat until 1885. After his death in 1909 the baronetcy became extinct. |
