Dhivehi is written by means of the socalled "Thaana" script, that is based upon Sinhala, Hindi and mainly Arabic scripts. The script belongs to the Phoenician script . It is - like Arabic - written from right to left. The age of the written language (of the script) is mentioned in: the history of writing . You can make texts yourself be using pictures or html-codes. Using html-codes is the simple way, but you need Windows XP to make the characters visable. OR you can use the best "Language" Browser: Fire Fox 0.9.1 from www.mozilla.org . The browser makes it possible to read all language-scripts - even if you use an old version of Windows. The 10 vowels are presented seperately in the following picture: . From left to right they present: ah, aa, uh, u, e, ey, oh, oo, i and y. Eight vowels are presented as upper vowels and the other two as lower vowels. This will be explained here. Hierboven staat een plaatje met de 10 klinkers. De volgorde is v.l.n.r.: a, aa, u, oe, eh, ee, oh, oo, i and ie. Acht worden boven de medeklinkers geplaatst (de linker 8) en de overige 2 (rechts) onder de medeklinkers.
To write the word "dh(i)v(e)h(i)" you need html codes: 1931 (= dh), 1928 (= v) and 1920 (= h). The vowels i, e, and i are placed above or below those three characters. The result is:
