WINDMILLS

Windmills have been used in the Netherlands since about 1400.
They have been employed for milling corn but also other grains into flour or powders like paint powder.
Other types were used for sawing wood or to regulate the water level in the polders.

The windmill area of Kinderdijk consist of 19 mills dating from around 1740.
The area is situated in the Alblasserwaard at approximately 25 km distance from Rotterdam.
In 1997 the UNESCO placed Kinderdijk on the World Heritage List of the UNESCO,
a recognition of the unique character of the mill area.

However, the mills at Kinderdijk are still in a neglected state because there has not been funded enough money
for proper maintenance of all the windmills of Kinderdijk and the many other mills spread over the area.
From an inventarisation of all Kinderdijk mills it was shown that 4 Million euro will be needed to bring
them all back into a good condition.
