Here you can download WinFace, a simple interface for the Compface library programmed by James Ashton. With this program, you can create and view X-Faces. An X-Face is a black-and-white 48x48 image. Compressed into readable text they are sent along with the headers of an e-mail message or a Usenet post. They look like this:
X-Face: ,yZe&Tj9$FUgmULRq.59zanbT\\CLj~Ns^BDS!7;,[KqKJy+Ix7?j|GG8SF*~+)|bh69XnO
>"AN?</P@m!s{:Dp}|%,#JZbAUaz[%l3PGHUh$3-ZAfdRUL.SR#vkQim`cW`D~h1K~6-C~My:@#0`$
`bn^p?+I(f8qEk4)ypyW(|
WinFace also comes with an unsupported patch to add the display of X-Faces to Gravity, an NNTP client. A screenshot: gravity.png. Gravity versions currently supported are 2.3, 2.5 and Super Gravity 2.60 build 2039.
The current version is 1.51 (2002-04-27).

WinFace1_51.zip 17.3 KB
interesting for developers only:
WinFace1_51-src.zip 45.1 KB, source code for NASM and Microsoft Incremental Linker
compface-delphi.zip 24.2 KB, Delphi X-Face SDK
libwinface-1.0.zip 54.9 KB, C X-Face library (compface+utility functions for bitmaps+Windows example application)
See also James Ashtons Homepage. There you can download the Compface source, with which you can compile the compface source to get the object files that come with the source distribution. You can also just download the Microsoft Visual C++ project here: compface-msvc6.zip. That package contains the compface source with some modifications to make things easier (LF/CRLF issues, if you're interested).
You can also view the readme file online: WinFace.txt. This contains the license (BSD) as well.
