BREAKING NEWS:

FLYING TYGERS ALBUM IS HERE, AND... THE MUSICMAKER DOESN'T LIKE IT!

Without all too much fuss (with plenty of fuzz though), the Radio Action! album was released. It came out nicely, and although we are now busy with a new line-up it's cool to finally have these recordings available. Musicmaker reviewed the album and gave it two stars out of five: after six songs "they can't distinguish [the music] from white noise". No problem: they gave full marks for the Dutch entry for thew Eurovision Song Contest! So if you do not like The Common Linnets... you may like the racket we have put out. Well, maybe. I don't know.

MEANWHILE...
What have we been up to? Gigging (we should put those shows on the 'agenda' here, or skip the 'agenda' page and say 'check facebook' instead), writing new songs, picking some nuggets from the heyday of garage music, enjoying it all at a leisure pace... becoming tighter as a band, for one thing. Working on backing vocals. Trying what set list works best. Playing for Radio Tonka celebrating their 20th anniversary.

Oh and I put a new photo on the website's index page. It's from the album sleeve. I'm sure you'll love it!

- - - - MARCH 2013: - - - -

NEW LINE UP COMPLETE, EP IS THERE...!.

We are happy to announce that The Flying Tygers now are: Tim Herrebrugh (aka Dead Cat Stimpy)- guitar, Sjors van Roosmalen still going strong on bass, Eric Geevers doing lead vocals, organ and some additional guitar, and Remco Cornelissen (ex-Incense, that's right) on drums. This feels good. We have already recorded a track for the upcoming Dutch Garage Explosion vinyl comp (invited by Kizzy and Pieter), and hope to be back on the stages again soon. Looks like this is going to take off, and seriously too. Meanwhilke there's the split EP (Tygers+Manimal) that was recorded with Dorien and Jonathan, it's there, gatefold sleeve and all, so make sure you get your copy soon 'cos it's a limited run.

- - - - SEPTEMBER 2012: - - - -

WE ARE, IN FACT, NOT DEAD YET.

So what happened? Well... first of all, Vanderbuyst made a breakthrough album followed by some extensive touring and yet another album, which meant the Flying Tygers had to take the back seat for a while longer. And when Jochem and Barry announced they couldn't do two fully operational bands any longer, it came as no surprise - so the Flying Tygers had to find a new drummer and a new guitarist. Okay... fine. A great farewell gig, no hard feelings, and see what we're gonna do...
There was an album to finish, new people to find, kids to raise (for Eric - two, by now), a new job (for Sjors)...
So suddenly we find ourselves fast forwarded to the here and now.
Again, what happened?
We have gigged and recorded with Jonathan van der Haak on drums (Dicemen, I-Reject) and Dorien Meijsing on guitar (Tiger String Ensemble, Santa Cruz), did a one-off gig with Rob Louwers on drums (Link Wray, Fuzztones), we had reeled in Bart van Halderen (The Loo, The Faint Lights) for a while, but we're ready to announce a new name soon... another 'name musician' I can tell you, but superstition keeps me from telling just yet.
Lisanne was aboard once more with her sax, as you can see below. (Not right below... that's not her.)We have finished the album and decided to expand it with a shitload of bonus tracks, including Raving Bonkers tracks, demos, everything. Spring cleaning, ladies and gentlemen!

The full title of the album is "RADIO ACTION! - THE EARLY YEARS OF THE FLYING TYGERS" and we're busy with the last details of the sleeve. Meanwhile, we're also working on a split 7" with Manimal (that was going to be mastered by Fred Cole once more, but due to difficulties with the disc cutter it has been postponed) and there's enough songs for a full album of whatever coherent line-up will establish itself.
We are, as you might have gathered, not in a hurry - we want to do it right, not necessarily right now.
Enough talk! Some evidence then! This'll be our side of the Tygers/Manimal split EP:

BACK ON TRACK

With the Vanderbuyst album in the can (well - recorded, that is), maybe we'll get a chance to work on some new Flying Tygers material. As we speak there's another new song fresh from the quilt: Ain't Gonna Listen To You, written and recorded yesterday and today. The demo (a ramshackle recording as usual) features some nice guest vocals by Majka and Daphne who just happened to be rehearsing at SPOD.
"Hi, got a minute?" "Ermmm, yes." "Do you mind doing some backing vocals for me? I'm writing this song, and..." "Sure, that's okay..."
So two nice girls I didn't know before recorded a song they didn't know before - a song that wasn't even finished then.
Came out fine though... thanks Daphne, thanks Majka!

AWARD FOR FLYING TYGERS SONG 'NO ALTERNATIVE LEFT' - SAY WHAT?

Would you believe it...! Here's the whole story:
The Dutch 'Fontys' Rock Academy launched a National Song Writing Contest for Dutch musicians writing English lyrics, with two categories: lyrics-only, and lyrics with music. The whole idea started with the book Rock Your English, written by Buffi Duberman. Buffi teaches English at the Rock Academy, and her book is nice and useful for Dutch lyricists who don't want to fall into those darn grammatical manholes when expressing themselves in English. Recommended, especially if you do speak English but need to fine-tune things like your present perfect continuous. (If you don't actually give a crap, well - don't bother, but it's fun to read, and it may save you from some major egg on your face.)
Still, why send in a song, you might wonder. Well... one of the jury members turned out to be Henkjan Smits, who is (or was, anyway) also a member of the Idols jury in Holland. You know... Idols, like American Idol...? Indeed. Furthermore, Buffi works as a coach for Idols, Starmaker, So You Wanna Be a Popstar, X-factor... uh-huh.
So, what better song to give them than 'No Alternative Left?' That would be just the kind of thing tot tell to Rock Academy students, too.
We give you the full lyrics first:

What they tell you is very clear:
All you need is the latest equipment,
Twenty-four tracks, no, make that forty-eight
And your image needs some adjustments...
Today, 'alternative' don't mean a thing
There is no alternative left

Looking back, it's all very clear;
Rock'n'roll was born from rebellion,
So if you want to to be a rebel too, follow the charts
At least, that's what they're trying to sell you...
Today, rebellion is sold by the pound,
But there's only a few rebels left

So get yourself a cheap shit guitar,
Plug it into a cheap shit amp,
Get some friends together, form a band,
Count four and wig out!

What they tell you, yeah that's very clear,
But you've got to figure out your own way,
Today, a new generation plugs in
That shows me there is some hope left...

(Sometimes followed by self-referentially mis-quoting the Byrds: 'and don't forget who you are / you ain't no rock'n'roll star...')

And, would you believe it indeed... first prize, which meant a band of Rock Academy students playing the song on the Main Stage of the 013 venue in Tilburg (pic below), congratulations from Buffi, and Eric (who wrote the song) winning half an hour of private coaching by Mrs Duberman. Winning this national competition... well, that is nice.

However... claiming the microphone for an inpromptu speech, Eric said that first of all the way the band treated his song was "fucking A!", but that he himself would never apply to the Rock Academy: "It may be the right way for you all, I don't know about that, but please consider that there are other ways... and most importantly: whatever you do, find your own way."

With all due respect, and emphasizing that it's nothing personal, Eric has turned down the offer of half an hour of coaching. He was perfectly happy with his signed copy of Rock Your English though, and yes: proud of winning the award, too.

The song will be on the upcoming album, and for the completists: Eric released an early version of it with The Napoleons (split EP with Dr Reverb, Tombstone USA).

VANDERBUYST TAKE THE FRONT SEAT FOR A WHILE

Jochem and Barry, together with ex-Bonker Willem, have a power trio named Vanderbuyst, and with Eric being occupied by parenthood (and looking for a bigger house), Vanderbuyst are preparing their first album. No, it's not sloppy garage rock, it's super-tight, loud and proud old-fashioned hard rock; Vanderbuyst are getting some fine reviews on their demo, but when these new recordings are finished, the work on the Tygers album will continue.

- - - - JANUARY 2010: - - - -

HEARTBREAKERS AND ASS-SHAKERS

The brand new 2CD compilation Heartbreakers And Ass Shakers IV is released now, with one song by the Flying Tygers (on CD2). In good company here: Cooper, Elle Bandita, The Death Letters, Deze, Hausmagger... there's The Loo and The Fifth, So What... lots more, lots more - know what, check it out!

- - - - NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2009: - - - -

PEACE AND QUIET:

To tell you the truth; not much going on, gig-wise. Working on the recordings a bit, on-off, digging up some old songs to try, writing new material, - but at the moment Jochem and Barry focus on the Vanderbuyst recordings.

- - - - OCTOBER 2009: - - - -

JUST A QUICK PHOTO UPDATE:

Playing a gig every now and then, doing some recording inbetween (still no chance of actually having a studio session with the whole band in one room...), and having a look at the photos people send us. Like these ones, (c) Erik Jansen Fotografie (put up here with permission!). Yep, that's Spike joining us, for our little ditty "Ain't That True" - after a quick run-through in the dressing room.

Thanks Erik!

WEDDINGS, PARTIES, ANYTHING:

Not too much going on at the moment, all busy with other stuff, but we DID play a wedding - as the Flying Tygers in Raving Bonkers suits, with an unexpected encore where we set free the Bonkers spirit after all. Not your average wedding band, indeed. Meanwhile the Westerpop show still gives us some nice echoes, like this blog, with some nice photos.
Speaking of photos...

We got these ones from the NOPF happening. That's 18 strings on one guitar, correct. And Sjors is playing a Vox bass for the occasion...
Thanks Eelco for the photos!

FRONT PAGE NEWS:

Opening a festival can be tough: the first band plays to a crowd that's just beginning to get in the mood - if there's any crowd at all. It doesn't have to be tough, though. Luckily the Flying Tygers drew plenty of fans, and the band just did what they always do, full-throttle (as expected). And hey presto, that worked again. Encore guaranteed!
Above: rhe Flying Tygers made it to the front page of the Algemeen Dagblad's The Hague/Delft newspaper edition. There's also a bunch of photos at the page of Jolanda van Wijhe, and on the Hyves page of René Von Hout.
The 'V score' now comes to a staggering six Flying V guitars, all of them cheap ones with some home-cooked modifications: Jochem plays a red V with trem bar and pick-up replacement, he uses a black V with trem bar and extra humbucker as a backup; Sjors plays a black V bass, and Eric picks and chooses from a black V sitar (debut at Westerpop!), a red V 12-string, and the black V with theremin inside. And a sickening collection of combo organs, of course, although the Farfisa has proven a favourite.

Earlier this month...:
THEREMIN-GUITAR GETS A MAKE-OVER

It was a weird plan from the start, but it worked nevertheless: a theremin built inside a Flying V guitar, with a sitar bridge to make the whole idea complete.
However, although it worked fine, the soldering was a bit of a ramshackle job (it's not one of Eric's major skills...) It was not really 'designed' - it was simply put together, switches and wires added as it grew. All in all, it was due to fall apart any day - in fact, the guitar electronics had given up (at the Primitive festival).
A couple of nights of cursing and it's as good as new, lookin better too - with the name of the theremin's inventor Lev Sergejvich Termen (better known as Léon Theremin) now put proudly on the headstock.

The theremin-guitar can now also serve as a (ho-hum) regular backup guitar again.
The sitar bridge now has a V of its own... that one is under construction. More nights of cursing.
It might be making its debut at Westerpop (Aug 29th).

PIERCED ARROWS 7" LIMITED EDITION TOUR BOX OUT NOW!

...so hey, what does that have to do with the Flying Tygers? First of all: Fred and Toody of Pierced Arrows (and Dead Moon!) released the Flying Tygers' EP on their Tombstone label. Secondly, Pierced Arrows are coming over to Europe for another tour: go and see them - that's an order. Furthermore, the Flying Tygers frequently play 'You Must Be A Witch' written by Fred Cole, and Fred and Toody are long-time friends of Eric (and Maaike).
But this box set is specifically mentioned here because in one of the booklets you find a photo of the Flying Tygers...! To be precise: a pic of Eric (phone-mic in hand) and Sjors, on stage at the Bazart - indeed, supporting Pierced Arrows. A photo of that evening's poster (with 'V'sticker boldly attached) is in there, too, along with a plethora of other photos, stories (about Pierced Arrows and Dead Moon), interviews with Fred, Toody and drummer Kelly Halliburton, a reproduction of a tour itinerary, a map... and the 7" Paranoia b/w Ain't Life Strange. Take a look here, it's a project by Simone Müller (and hey Simone, you did a fantastic job, it's a real treasure!). If you want to contact her to get your own copy (one of only 300 made!!), please mail to pa-tourbook (at) gmx.de and... be sure to catch Pierced Arrows on one of their shows.

BACK TO BRIENENOORD AND MORLOCK

Remember that the first Raving Bonkers gig was at a squat in The Hague, known as either the SCSI Cell of the Morlock Gallery...? Now the Flying Tygers played there, with electropunk-duo Tiger Counter Of Drog Orkestar and our friends of the Tiger String Ensemble, who presented their CD and put this bill together as a Triple Tiger Thrust! Fast Mike had a camera rolling, in a fixed position (beaming the whole thing on the wall and recording at the same time). The stills below are from that video... nice, thanks!

The Bonkers gig at the NOPF Festival at Brienenoord eiland was another blast, we hope to get some pics up from that one as well...

PRIMITIVE #6 CHAOS AND SOME RADIO ACTION

Don't get me wrong: Primitive wasn't a chaos at all, it was another far-out way-cool happening (courtesy of Mr Dandy Dave), but the Flying Tygers' equipment failure made the stage a no.1 disaster area. We stopped counting the broken strings, broken guitarstraps, faulty wires... the audience were very supportive, when guitars were swapped it was like "how many strings has that one left? Four? OK, I'll take that one", Eric quipped "well guys, that's something you won't see at a Bon Jovi gig" - and people loved the band for it. It was blisteringly hot, and all-in-all the band played a good show - considering. There's a cool review on Musicfrom.nl and some photos too. (Billy Childish, Cavestompers, Fleshtones, Flying Tygers... wow!)
The day before Primitive it was Bonkers time; the last show by Delft-based band 4for1 was a blast, and it was a pleasure and an honour to close that night with a Raving Bonkers wig-out. Local newsrag Delft op Zondag has some photos, and there's a heap on the Speakers site...
However the month kicked into gear with a "night of the Delft garage scene" at RTV West; with Rob Louwers (Ace-Tones, Link Wray, Robert Gordon & Chris Spedding, Fuzztones) standing in for Barry, the Flying Tygers played a handful of tunes live at the radio studio. Also present and correct: the Napoleons, the Raving Bonkers (without Barry, but with extra guitar by Willem, with an acoustic set! ...no, really!) and The X-Ray Men. Here's some pics...:

MELKWEG WAS A BLAST!

Too bad if you weren't there, but trust me... it was one hell of a good show supporting the Black Lips:

It's great to hear one of the Melkweg sound crew say "whoa, you guys are motherfucking good!" right after the show.
("zo, wat jullie zijn allejezus goed zeg!") What can one say? Muchos gracias, señor!

Funny thing is, the Flying Tygers can please a crowd but obviously can't please them all: here's a blogger's review that leaves no stone unturned in pointing out how crappy the band was. Wrong ages, wrong guitars, wrong everything. Well... to be honest, it is hilarious, funny, and if that's the man's opinion - he sure knows how to write it down well. The fact that he also says he left after the first notes only to return at the last song's outro means he missed just about all of the show, but who cares. At least one person agrees with the guy, so maybe he's absolutely right. Ermmmm, not about the frontman being rockabilly, though.
Or about the ages, should anyone care.

Here's some more pics, including Sem and Lisanne again...and yes, on the left, that was the damage to Jochem's finger:

Photos taken by Judith, this time!
(The Flying Tygers opening for the Black Lips, Wednesday May 27th, at the Melkweg (aka Milky Way), Amsterdam)

And speaking of photos...:

Meanwhile, this is a great photo taken by Kim at Vredebreuk... no tricks, no wires!

LISANNE HAS JOINED THE RANKS!

At the Speakers gig, May 1st, the Flying Tygers had Lisanne (of Andere Koek!) playing alto sax on stage with us for two songs, together with Sem (on trumpet again). In true Tygers/Bonkers tradition, this was after only two quick rehearsals - and it worked out fine! Hopefully we'll see some more of her in the future (and that is a perfect gentleman-like way of expressing the hope that the Flying Tygers will, indeed, be joined more often by Lisanne and her saxophone, thank you very much...).
Another surprise guest: Spike (The Deaf/Di-Rect) jumped on stage, and plugged in his Phantom to join in with Ain't That True! That was a staggering seven people on stage for one song... phew! Too bad all this didn't get a mention in this review, but then again it's a fine review that captures the atmosphere OK... it was a great night and those who were there know what went down...
(Eric's pants, for one thing. I'm sure it was this lovely young lady who shouted 'broek uit!!' ('take off yer pants!!'), such request being honoured without hesitation.
Be careful what you wish for, as they say...!)
Photos of all this (correction: most of this) will follow soon!

HEY, LOOK!
The 'Popunie' has put this one on YouTube... be sure to watch the whole clip!

3rd PRIZE AT THE GPZH!
That's right, after a whole string of bands that tried to make it to the finals, only six bands played at the WATT. And first of all, congrats to THE FIFTH who once again displayed great musicianship, and who rightfully celebrated being the big winners of the evening! That said, 2nd place was for the Flying Martinis and even with a bit of a ramshackle set, the Flying Tygers walked away with the 3rd prize. (By the way, 2nd and 3rd prize are indentical except for the honour; it's 1000 band stickers, a set of pro earplugs for the whole band, and 'credits for the musicfrom.nl site' which is something we will undoubtedly learn more about.)
Sem (new haircut again, mirror shades...) was there again, too, going wild on 'Ain't That True'!
Photo courtesy of Megin Zondervan - we'll put some of her cool live and backstage photos here soon!

Radio action!

As mentioned, the working title of the upcoming album is RADIO ACTION, and we foresee some more cool radio action in the near future. Vaida Zvaigzdele of Radio Tonka has been playing both Raving Bonkers and Flying Tygers in her show, and there are plans of doing a live gig on air (even if it's at two in the morning). Furthermore RTV West show Stork On Air, recently moved to the internet (being Stork On Line now??) is planning a show with The Napoleons, The Raving Bonkers, The Flying Tygers and The X-Ray Men. Yes, that's four garage/surf bands with Eric in them. Stay tuned fot more news... you'll hear it here first. The news, that is...

- - - - FEBRUARY 2009: - - - -

LESS BREAKING, STILL NEWS:

The band has made the finals of the "GPZH", to be held at WATT (Rotterdam), April 17th. Speakers saw a blistering 20 minutes of Flying Tygers, including a new song called "Radio Action" that is destined to be the title track of the upcoming album. On stage, "No Alternative Left" was dedicated to Jessica Mérette Geevers, born February 5th 2009, daughter of Eric and Maaike! And in case you wondered, yes, there's major lack of sleep involved, and Eric did the show on adrenalin, stubbornness, and being teetotal for weeks now.
On the left: little Jessica in Vox grillcloth diapers. (Yep, that's for real!)
(Should she prefer playing hockey to playing music when she grows up, fine, we'll put some Vox grill cloth on the stick's grip then.)

So anyway, please come and cheer for the Flying Tygers that 17th of April. And if you don't like us, there are other bands to enjoy: The Fifth (hi guys!), 27 Ways to Win, Joey’s Corner, The Flying Martinis, and The Loo (Bart... you again!).

EVEN LESS BREAKING, BUT STILL...:
The Flying Tygers have a new Vox organ: a rare Vox Junior! So far it hums and buzzes enthusiastically, but it does not actually, well, work as such. However, Barry's cat thinks it's a perfect piece of furniture for a cat to sit on. And let's face it, cats are rarely wrong in those matters. Should the organ be fixed, it might replace the Farfisa sometimes, though...

For the gear heads: on stage the band uses a Farfisa FAST-4 mostly, and sometimes a Vox Coninental (an original '64 wooden key type!); they also have a Vox Continental 300, a Vox Corinthian, a Philicorda, an Armon Charlie, a battered Ace-Tone, and -gasp!- even an authentic, all-original Jennings Univox.
That one is working, but it's fragile and won't be taken out on the road, ever.
In fact few people have ever witnessed its mere existence, but it's there, believe me.

You may have noticed that Sem wasn't at the Speakers gig. Correct! He's quite busy with his acting career, with his own band,... and with school (reportedly). Next time, we hope, he's on board again! Meanwhile here's a recent picture of him - he had his hair dyed blue a while ago.
The TV series he's in, 'Sterke verhalen uit Zoutvloed', has a re-run on nationwide TV(already!), and since they have a week long holiday from school, Sem is in the studio with his jazz duo Lonely Friends...

And speaking of Flying Tygers being active in other bands, so far we hadn't mentioned VANDERBUYST, the oldschool hard rockin' trio of Jochem (aka J.A. Jonkman, on bass/vocals), Barry (drums) and Willem Verbuyst (of Raving Bonkers fame - and more, since he played in bands like The House Of Destructo, the Devil's Blood, Powervice, original warp-surf trio Dr.Reverb...) Check out their MySpace!
Meanwhile Sjors also plays in the DOLDRUMS, a punk outfit that's been going for quite some time now, and Eric always plays in more than one sixtiespunk/garageband (he even occasionally plays bass in the Fuzztones (USA) these days!): HERE you can see what Eris is up to nowadays.

- - - - JANUARY 2009: - - - -

The Flying Tygers play Speakers once again, this time at an evening of the "GPZH" (Grote Prijs van Zuid-Holland), along with five other other bands: Jellybread, The Fifth, The Faint Lights, Patent Pending , andMaybee. Kickoff is at eight, more at the Speakers site!

- - - - DECEMBER 2008: - - - -

The MUSICMAKER magazine has given the Raving Bonkers/Flying Tygers EP four out of five stars: read it here...
The gig at the Fonds 1818 Winnaarsfestival (at Het Paard van Troje) was a blast! Announced by René Steijger as "de schrik van Delft" ("the terror of Delft") the band played to a full house, with Rob Louwers jumping on stage for some raw blues harp (no need for rehearsals!), the Farfisa crash landing, everyone blissed-out: mission accomplished. There's a review on the VPRO "3voor12" site and a couple of photos on the highly recommended site "Haags Pop Podium met Gerard van den IJssel!" And speaking of photos, here's a couple of cool ones...:

-

As you can see, the acting career of 'regular guest' Sem is doing A-okay! Here he's seen in 'Raaf Mixer', an interactive series made for VPRO television (have a look at www.raafmixer.nl). Yes, he's wearing a Flying Tygers shirt... smart move! And it's funny that Sem is here playing a musician who entered the Kunstbende contest... since in real life he's a musician who not just entered that contest (with his jazz duo Lonely Friends), but made it to the national finals, even playing at the 'BIM-huis': sacred ground for jazz musos!
Have a look at the Kunstbende site...
And just in case you missed it, Sem also played the part of Sjoerd in the brilliant series "Sterke verhalen uit Zoutvloed", which can be seen online too now: just click! He has the leading part in episode 5 and can be seen in some (if not most) of the other episodes too. Worth checking out the whole series if you've got the time.

The Flying Tygers have made a selection of the songs to be recorded for the upcoming album. Although new songs may be popping up at any moment (you never know), for now the count is: twelve originals to be recorded as well as a handful of authentic sixties gems. The idea is to put all originals on the album, with two or three rather obscure covers thrown in depending on which seem to fit in best. (No, there will be no umpteenth version of 'Strychnine' on this one, however the true garage buffs will probably know them of course - no problem.)
Do we give you titles? Ermmmm, no, we do not give you titles... yet.

But in case you were wondering who the mysterious Chaya is (for whom the song Someone Different was written - all right, that one will be on the album!), this is her, on the right, pictured with Eric!

Oh, and to piss off the people that say the Flying Tygers waste too much energy on their image: in the near future, we hope to see the band climbing the stage in matching shoes.
And remember: the ones who say "it should be all about the music, looks shouldn't play a part" are often the first ones to badmouth a band for... the way they look. An intrigueing, though rather sad, paradox.
Bring on those shiny two-tone shoes, I say!

- - - - NOVEMBER 2008: - - - -

The Flying Tygers play "Fonds 1818 Winnaarsfestival 2008"!
This annual festival, organised by Fonds 1818 ("the 1818 Fund") is a showcase of the winners of, as they say, the most important band contests in the area. Sunday, December 28th, 2008; the fun and games start at 19.30 and the location is Paard van Troje, Den Haag. It's gonna cost you 5 euros to get in. If you want to check out the other bands, you can use these links: Kangaroo Dynasty, Johnny Stalker, Cinq Croniq, Natha Lee, L4 and Two Way Radio.
The first band is on at 20.00h, and the Flying Tygers play a 25 minutes set, starting at 23.20h We were planned to play last, but Two Way Radio were added to the bill last-minute - they are the winners of the national 'Grote Prijs' so hey, sure! Those links include four MySpaces and a Hyves, ladies and gentlemen. Maybe it's time the Flying Tygers created a MySpace thingie too. Until then, you can watch some bits and pieces on YouTube.

The Flying Tygers on YouTube indeed:

More Westerpop clips on the 'Sounds' page.

Speaking of Westerpop... here's the plan...!
A meeting with René Steijger & Tjalling Fransen of the Westerpop crew has resulted in some nice plans.
We won't reveal everything just now, but one thing is certain: the Flying Tygers are going to record a full length album!
The setlist now contains a cool handful of original songs that simply scream to be recorded. Plus, there's a whole bunch of as yet unrehearsed songs that Eric has demo'd (with only vocal and Telecaster). So yeah, the band has plenty of material to work on, and when that's done, the studio (!) of choice is the Sahara Sound Studio in The Hague.
The idea is that this is a studio that can give the band a good recording, without losing the raw edge and crude power of the recordings made for the Tombstone EP.
Besides... studio-owner/producer (and Hallo Venray frontman) Henk Koorn likes the Flying Tygers, as he has mentioned in the MusicMaker magazine!

- - - - OCTOBER 2008: - - - -
Flying Tygers and TTT: round two!

This year's halloween saw the Flying Tygers share the stage with the Trailer Trash Tremblers yet again, this time in Doetinchem.
Good to see them again! This time we ended up doing 'Ace Of Spades' together. Hell yeah, motherfuckers!

- - - - SEPTEMBER 2008: - - - -
Flying Tygers and Trailer Trash Tremblers hit it off!

I wish we could say that it was a crowded venue, but hey - it wasn't. Still, on Sept 13th, Splotsz in Roelofarendsveen was the first on stage meeting of the Flying Tygers and the Trailer Trash Tremblers (although Eric and Jordy go way back).
Hell, so you play for 3500 people one night and for 35 the other night, but the point is that those who were there enjoyed it. They did. And so did the bands!

- - - - AUGUST 2008: - - - -

The Flying Tygers have won the Peter Tetteroo award at Westerpop 2008!

Although every band playing this evening is a winner, according to Big Man of Westerpop René Steijger,
only one band could actually win the huge trophy: the Peter Tetteroo Bokaal. One out of five. Well...:

After four fine bands it was both a challenge and an opportunity to go full throttle in uncut garage mode, and show the world some raw energy and pure un-premeditated wildness. With their Farfisa organ, an astounding heap of Flying V guitars, theremin and phone horn, plus last but not least the band's secret weapon Sem (pictured below) on trumpet and tambourine, they even threw in a song they had rehearsed only once, the night before (written for Sem's younger sister Chaya, a couple of days earlier). The jury was unanimous and surprisingly quick to decide who was the evening's winner, and mentioned the band's "energy, enthusiasm, and originality". The winners themselves hadn't seen it coming; the Flying Tygers were genuinely surprised, and wish to thank everyone that made this a great evening: Blended Culture, Ghostrock, L'Chaim, Stud Muffins, plus Remco Cornelissen and Tjalling Franssen (on stage/backstage), René and his team that make Westerpop a truly unique festival, of course the honoured members of the jury, sound crew, light crew, Koos and others for the photos, everyone in a yellow shirt, and... everyone in the audience screaming their lungs out.
There were a LOT of you.

Not everyone was impressed though, if you look at this review (in Dutch). It says the jury's choice was 'very surprising' and it boldly states that the jury might have been, or rather: was wrong.
The peformance of the Flying Tygers is rated 'not bad', but it says they should not have won. The reason? Their kind of music 'has been done too many times before'.
True, garage rock and sixties punk - it has been done before, just like, say, the well-played rock of fellow-competitors Stud Muffins who didn't break any new ground either. No problem, I'd say.
But the fact that the reviewer then goes on to say L'Chaim should have won is pretty silly - not because L'Chaim would have been a bad choice, but because of the fact that klezmer has been done for some time too (in fact: well over a century now).
Everyone should feel free to dislike the music of the Flying Tygers.
But let's say: it's better to dislike it for the right reasons.
That's Sem all right!

The Westerpop CD is here!

We're very happy how things came out: the Flying Tygers sound exactly like they should.
And believe me, if people in the master room or somewhere else down the line had said "these guys sound too crude",
they could really have spoiled the fun... which they didn't, bless 'em!

The gig at the Brienenoord-eiland was great fun: all right people, all right environment, all right atmosphere... it's a place the Flying Tygers want to return to... Thanks everyone!

- - - - JUNE 2008: - - - -

Both WHAT'S GOOD FOR ME and IT'S NOT THE SAME are chosen to be released on the Westerpop CD.
They were recorded in glorious mono, the way it should. Prepare for some fierce fuzz, some tremolo, Vox organ, pounding drums, throbbing bass, wyld vocals (even three part harmonies!) and a bit of psychotic piano thrown in for extra flavour.
A bit tricky: the deadline we had been given was said to be for providing the compositary credits ("you can give us the actual recording some time later, no problem"). Then suddenly it appeared that the deadline for handing in the recordings had gone by without giving the Flying Tygers any further notice - in fact, because of that, it wasn't even clear whether or not the band would actually BE on the CD. Luckily, the recordings are in mono... so as mono-"wav" soundfiles the songs were relatively small, and they could be emailed straight from the rehearsal/recording room (SPOD) to the record plant.
If you skip the tech talk, this means: ah well, the bloodpressure is slowly dropping to normal values, again. Last night (Tuesday, June 3rd) the Flying Tygers have started recording three new songs. Titles: Far Too Far Away, What's Good For Me, and Baby Baby. One of these will also appear on the Westerpop CD.

- - - - MAY 2008: - - - -

As you may or may not have noticed, the website of the Flying Tygers has grown from two pages to a full site in only two days!
We still believe it's more fun making music than making websites, but the web can be pretty useful. Oh, and fun, too! So yeah, you can download some promo stuff, and in the near future we hope to offer sound clips and a plethora of photos. For now, just click around... and see what's happening to the band...
Like this luck of the draw - the Flying Tygers play as the closing act at the Friday night of Westerpop:

All bands playing that night will also be on the annual Westerpop CD, with two songs each. The Flying Tygers have picked "It's Not The Same" (recorded at the same sessions as the Tombstone EP) and a second song will be recorded soon.
We'll let you know what it'll be as soon as we know :-)

It's pretty amazing, still. Having played only THREE gigs so far, the Flying Tygers have been selected to play the Friday night of this year's WESTERPOP festival, on August 29th.
Playing there also means entering the competition for the 'Peter Tetteroo Bokaal', a trophy named after the late lead singer of The Tee Set. Does this mean the Flying Tygers have already stooped to the "let's enter each and every rock contest" approach? No way! Westerpop is simply one hell of a great festival. Let's make it clear that it wouldn't hurt if one of the others wins (know what, let's make that L'Chaim - they're a wicked klezmer band also playing that night, and they're friends!).

That settled, the Flying Tygers will play like they always do: counting four and wigging out, without a worry.

Westerpop might see the debut of these new toys... A set of four Takstar TA-54D microphones!

Would Koornbeurs Open Air actually be 'Open Air' this year, with the serious threat of heavy rainfall...? That was the question - but Sjors took charge, and with the help of a lot of Koornbeurs people, this year's "KOA" was definitely Open Air and... grrrreat!

...AND MORE OF THAT GIG!
(photos by Mar)

De Koornbeurs is always an amazing place to play (all Tygers have done so regularly over the years, with various bands - even as early as 1986!). It's always cool to play an outdoor gig, and it did not even rain when the Flying Tygers played! After this gig they headed towards Pijnacker to play as The Raving Bonkers, but some of the band stayed to see the farewell gig of Joey and the Peters first whereas others went to see L'Chaim before taking off.

The second Pierced Arrows gig in the Netherlands, the second Flying Tygers gig ever: April 13th, a night to remember.
After a handful of Flying Tygers songs, Pierced Arrows' Toody climbed on stage to present the band with their EP on Tombstone (which is, as y'all might know, set up by Fred and Toody Cole - and has brought you all that awesome Dead Moon vinyl). See picture below on the upper left! The Flying Tygers then had the friggin' nerve to play You Must Be A Witch in front of Fred Cole himself...!
Afterwards, Fred said "you had that song down just right, it was spot on, you did a great job on it". Yeeeeeeeeee-haw!!
A song that Eric wrote for the first Ace-Tones album was played with a salute to Hans Kesteloo (of Music Maniac Records, who was spotted in the audience); this time around all equipment worked, and no strings broke.

AND MORE BAZART PICS...!

The band had a pretty decent sound, too, with a good FOH mixer (thanks Dennis!) and a great crowd. Yes, they came to see Pierced Arrows. But they also wanted to hear a Flying Tygers encore - and hey, Toody was yelling for more, too!
The EPs had been folded into their sleeves just the other night, stamped with a serial number (001 to 300, yes that's a pretty limited edition!)...
Ladies and gentlemen, we are proud to present to you...:

The Tygers Have Landed!
They're here!

A cool split EP by The Raving Bonkers and The Flying Tygers, in glorious mono, mastered and cut by Fred Cole on his Presto-88 machine that once gave the world the original 7" of The Kingsmen's "Louie, Louie".
Are we talking rock'n'roll here or what?

The Bonkers side has "SuperSonic", "Sultans Of Sleaze" and the live-at-the-Paradiso "Everybody Up!" The Tygers side starts off with "Gonna Give You What You Need", rolls on into "Need A Woman", and adapts the old song by The Chob ("We're Pretty Quick") to a steamin' "We're Flying Tygers (As A Matter Of Fact)".
Six songs crammed onto one 33 1/3rd RPM disc... yes sir!

The sleeve is a cool fold-out job, worth buying this EP even if you can't play vinyl anymore (shame on you - here's what: buy one of those cheap record-players at a fleamarket and improve your coolness instantly!).
Besides, so far we haven't found ANY spelling mistakes, typing errors... nothing! What IS on it is a beautiful photo of a beautiful girl, and inside there's some more stunning pictures of her and... well, you just buy one and see.
Thanks a lot Sophie for posing!

The EP is out on Tombstone Records, USA, and will also be sold at gigs of course. We're working on order-by-email.

As you can see the Flying Tygers now have some merch for sale. This includes T-shirts and buttons!
(Here's a tanktop worn by Jip, who's more of a Telecaster girl herself actually)

AND THESE SHIRTS WERE SOLD RIGHTAWAY AT...:

The Tygers Have Taken Off!
THE FLYING TYGERS TAKE-OFF GIG!
(photos by Linda)

Invited to be the headliner of a 3-band line-up at local venue Speakers, the Flying Tygers debuted at March 22nd, 2008. Initial problems with the Vox Continental, a faulty echo machine, and Eric's voice shot to hell in three songs notwithstanding, this set rocked.
And when Jochem broke a string, ex-Bonker Sander came to the rescue putting a new one on rightaway...!
Unfortunately, when the audience demanded an encore, it was time to clear the stage. You know... in some venues, at twelve, the dance crowd is expected, and we all know sometimes they are a bit allergic to live music (or to good music for that matter). Hence a sudden change of atmosphere... time to split after a great night with No Tomorrow, 4for1 (thanks for inviting us), and the first Flying Tygers gig. Hey and Gideon, thanks for booking us!
