Real love?

You can always deny that it would ever concern you
Or that it has any relevance at all to your view of the world.
Why? Pity? Self-pity? Of course not! Hah! - No,

For you are 'hardened', you have defences, distractions,
And have no such weaknesses or silly desires
That you would allow to undermine your logical thinking,
Or affect your conditioned responses or your progress.

But sometimes, not often, just like, oh, fleeting moments
When you think of the oh-so-remote possibility
That another could really have feelings for you -
What do you do then, eh?

You shudder, and retreat, don't you - oh yes you do.
After all, what in this world could you have to offer in return
Except scientifically-prescribed reactions, or run-of-the-mill platitudes?

Do not worry, however. No, there's no danger of any of that, - as you know.

So maybe you've never known what it could be like
To share your deepest thoughts so openly with someone
Who could really comprehend your intellectual processes.

But someone who would also know and protect your weaker side...
Oh, no, never, thank goodness for that.

After all, you ask, who on earth could possibly
Break down your most excellent defences!?

'No-one!' you will say; 'No-one at all!' -

Except, of course, there is -

The one that you will not admit to loving.
