Defences of Granite.
--------------------

Again I find it to be proved so clearly:
Far better never to become involved
Or ever to let the wall crumble,
Let alone be blasted away,
However attractive, whatever the force.

Oh! When will I ever, ever learn?
For at each new intrusion I simply
Open my arms and extend them in welcome,
Defences collapsing and not bothering to rebuild.

It is time for sturdy blocks of granite
To take the place of this weak, porous sandstone,
Blocks hopefully too heavy for me to lift again
And stronger than my own bombardments.

Only then will I be safe, and stable
Without the weaknesses of emotions and the heart
That seem to be capable of culling one to the ground,
And able to be the busy recluse that I should be.
