What is to come?

Change?
-------

For what is to come, what is to change?
The question is asked by many in anxiety.
Do not worry, says the wise man
For what is to come is no cause for concern
And the change will only be for the better.

So it must be foretold, for to tell the truth
Would surely destroy a dozen souls, if known,
Unprepared for the onslaught of change
Too weak for what came in any case, of course
But at least they still live to face the shadow of tomorrow.

But who protects and comforts the one who knows
Who can advise the one who perceives?
What is their lot, when all else has left them
But their depressive realization of an empty future?
Only the clouds of eventual insanity, for nothing else is there!

And not even that will come at their convenience -
They must, embittered, and with no relief or relaxation,
Singularly force their way down the infinite tunnel
Knowing there's no light at the end, and no end
To the agony of the past and the futility of the future.
