From 1999 until the end of 1999 I ran my own Bulletin Board Service (BBS).
As the result of a computercrash and the lack of callers to the BBS (internet is appearantly
much more interesting nowadays) I decided to quit the BBS. Although there is no BBS anymore
I still run a FidoNet mailer and participate in FidoNet. For as long as FidoNet still excists and
for as long I have fun in participating, that is.
Well, here is some old information about the -now former- DataServer BBS: (the information will be updated soon to reflect the current situation).
The BBS is called DataServer
BBS and it is specialised in utilities for the OS/2 and Windows
95 operating systems. There is also a large library of anti-virus
software available. A large collection of utilities and other
goodies for the starting and expert BBS sysop can also be found
at DataServer BBS, and there are a lot of good file-networks
available (like FernWood OS/2, RADIST, GoldED distribution,
DOS_UTIL, Windows 95 Filedistribution and more!). If you'd like
to link to any of the available file-networks, just send me an
e-mail.
The BBS can be reached by
modem and ISDN at the following phonenumbers:
+31-70-3389164 (USRobotics V34 & ISDN X75/V110)
+31-70-3389165 (ZyXEL 19k2 & ISDN X75/V110)
(Dutch residents replace +31-70 by 070)
The BBS does not only offer a lot of files, it also offers
echomail from FidoNet (for those who are not familiar with
BBS'ing: echomail can be compared with usenet news). DataServer
also runs its own internet gateway for e-mail and Usenet News via
provider Internet Access Foundation (IAF). DataServer can be reached there as dserver.iaf.nl
I hope you will visit my BBS soon!
For more information about BBS'ing and FidoNet, see FidoNet en BBS related links.
New users at DataServer BBS initially get a downloadlimit of 2 Mb per day. As soon as the new user is verified, the download limit will be removed and the user will gain write access in the echomail areas.
Sysop of DataServer BBS is Tjipke de Vries
For lovers of technical details, DataServer BBS has the following specifications:
DataServer BBS runs
RemoteAccess v2.50 BBS software and uses FrontDoor 2.32.mL as
mailer, udnerOS/2 Warp 3
Other software used:
FMail 1.48b, Allfix 4.41.3, Ontour/Track 2.80, RP 1.10, Teles
OS/2 ISDN CAPI, SIO 1.60d, BlueWave maildoor for RemoteAccess,
JCQWK Maildoor and more. E-mail and usenet news via GIGO
0.99.970110.
The sysop reads and writes his mail using GoldED!
DataServer BBS is online
since 4 January 1993. At the time DataServer started at a 386 DX,
40 Mhz with 4 Mb of memory, a 120 Mb harddrive and a ZyXEL
U-1496E+ (19k2) modem. Soon a second 120 Mb harddrive was added.
June 1993 DataServer joined FidoNet. Very soon two times 120 Mb
harddrive space wasn't enough anymore and one of the 120 Mb
harddrives was replaced by a 420 Mb harddrive.
In 1995 DataServer migrated to a 28k8 speed: a US Robotics
Courier DS was bought. Also internet e-mail and usenet news was
introduced. Halfway 1996 the 386 system was replaced by a 486
SX/25. Later that year DataServer got an extra line, the ZyXEL
modem was put back online on line 2. Also the OS upgraded from
DOS to OS/2, and the internal memory was upgraded to 8 Mb. Again,
additional harddrive space was needed and the other 120 Mb
harddrive was replaced by a 1 Gb harddrive.
Early 1996 the BBS got connected to the ISDN network and this made 64k0 speed available! Later the 486 SX processor was replaced by a 486 DX2/66. In the second half of 1996 the 1 Gb harddrive was replaced by a 3.8 Gb harddrive and the internal memory was upgraded to 20 Mb. The most recent hardware upgrade was a memory upgrade to 32 Mb in 1997.
