In her April 1995 column 'Mining the Internet' Judy Harris suggests " two basic ways that information can be shared on-line : among people and between people and remotely-located machines." . The first she calls 'interpersonal exchanges' and the other 'informational resources'. In May 1993 Harris published a typology of Internet-based projects under the general title 'structures for on-line educational activities'.

While one can argue that the difference between 'informational' and 'interpersonal' outcomes are frequently difficult to distinguish, nevertheless Harris's typology provides a useful framework for presenting the variety of Internet-based projects which we have discovered.
