Introduction
My name is Dave Johnson Scheepe. I am thirty-four years old and I live with my wife Wendy, my son Jamey in the Northern part of the Netherlands. The mastino has attracted me for sixteen years now. So I bought my first Mastino in 1990. It was a female and I called her Phylet This dog made me more curious about the breed!
Mrs Mar Michon from the Jardin du Michony kennels was the one who has coached and taught me to "look" at the Mastino and to "understand" him.
I had my second Mastino Neone Acquario Jardin du Michony from her. Unfortunately my dear Neone reached only eight months. After this great loss Mrs Michon offered me a Mastino : Orcus Acquario Jardin du Michony.

Every Mastino owner knows that there are nearly no books written about this breed. This became my ultimate challenge to collect books and magazines about this wonderful breed. I now have 11 books about the Mastino Napoletano, almost a hundred magazines about the breed (all over the world) and I have a documentary of almost 2000 pages of text taken of the internet (only concerning the Mastino Napoletano).

For several years I am very proud to be a member of three Mastino Napoletano Clubs:

  1. Societa Amatori Mastino Napoletano (Italy)

  2. Club du Matin Napolitain (France)

  3. United States Neapolitan Mastiff Club (USA)

The three mentioned clubs are very important to me.

History: The Mastino Napoletano in the 20th century
There is so much told about the history of the breed. My contribution to this item for you is to look at the photo's of this century. They will tell you more about the evolution in the breed. The oldest photo of the Mastino I found, is from 1898. In the 1920's you could find little mastini like this one. The farmers in Italy in the 1930's had Mastini like these. After World War II there were a few Mastini left. Piero Scanziani was the one who saved the Mastino from dieing out. He introduced the breed to a show in the late 1940's. He is the father of the Mastino. All the friends of the Mastino Napoletano has to thank Piero Scanziani for this wonderful breed, because without him this breed had not exist anymore. From the legendary couple "Pacchiana" and "Guaglione I " only one female Mastino could be used for breeding , who became the matriarch of the "Villanova"-Mastini and ancestor of many champions. His Mastino Guaglione became patriarch of the breed.

The late Mario Querci from Prato near Florence with his famous kennels "di Ponzano" was the one with most Mastino Napoletano champions . A friend of Mario Querci , Clemente Biondo from Cancello gave Querci a female Mastino Napoletano called "Fiamma" as a gift with the promise of a female puppy of the first litter. In Querci's hands Fiamma became the first female Mastino Napoletano crowned Italian Champion in 1953 following the first male - Scanziani's " Guaglione I " in 1949.

In 1951 Francesco De Lucia from Resina (which is near Pompei) gave Querci a Mastino pup. His name was Toto-Guaglione to distinguish him from countless other Guaglioni since the name, like the dog, became profilic. He became Italian Champion in 1953.Thus he was the second male to be crowned with the title after Scanziani's "Guaglione I".

The following genetic bloodlines throughout the years followed:
Scanziani Line     Giacchetella Line    Don Paolino Line
Falco Line      Nolano Line       Argo Line

Allocca Line     Zaccaro Oliviero Line    Barone D'Ottaviano Line

To judge the Mastino Napoletano based on what is desired in the breed, you first have to study the official

Standard of the Mastino Napoletano

Colors of the Mastino Napoletano: Grey ; Black ; Tawny ; Mahogany

My personal interest in the breed.

My personal interest in the breed is first of all the fascination about this dog who is complete different to all other dogs. There are so many questions about this wonderful breed, that I have decided to study the Mastino Napoletano.

To find answers to all the questions and to study the Mastino Napoletano I searched for specific Mastino Napoletano books. Especially the books and videos made by Mrs Sherilyn Allen, helped me in getting answers about the appearence of the Mastino in particular and of course the care and health problems.

For three years now (that means nearly every day and it continues!!) I have taken (downloaded to my hard-drive) everything that was published on the Internet about the Mastino Napoletano (that means throughout the world!), and I hope within a few years I will publish all the pictures and documents on a CD-ROM.
