I've read alot of Richard Laymon's work and this offering is a good, solid read but doesn't quite hit all cylinders for me. The plot of the story is quite an intriguing one. A young couple are about to make love for the first time but the condom splits before they get started so the boyfriend decides to go to the 24 hour speed d-mart about ten minutes down the block to buy some more condoms. So the girlfriend is left waiting in his apartment for him to return. Ten minutes later he hasn't returned yet, 15 minutes, 20 minutes over half an hour and he still isn't back , so she starts to worry about what might have happened to him but tries to convince herself that there's a perfectly reasonable explanation as to why he's been gone so long. But over one hour later when he still hasn't returned she somewhat reluctantly decides to go out and try to find him. But she has no idea what she's getting into as she heads off into the night on the streets of L.A., and this is where the story really begins. The two main characters have quite a bit of depth and are fairly convincing, although at times you are left bewidered by some of the actions that are taken by the girlfriend which seem illogical. There's alot of violence and gratuitous sex which some people may find perverse and offensive but that's just how Laymon writes. Overall this is an entertaining read but not one you'll remember for anything special. - an Amazon customer review
