Stars (at night)

On the far out sea journeys of the koggeschip (old style ship)
“The Almearder” from Vlefolande inthe Suydersee
navigate helmsman Boeke Janszoon
at dark nights and clear sky views
with the stars in the sky.

North Star
Using the star Polaris (Alpha Ursae Minoris), also known as North Star, its simply to stipulate the north in the northern hemisphere.
Find the "Big Dipper", determine in the 7 stars of the big dipper, the two stars at the end of the bowl. Follow the line between the two stars for approximately 5 times the distance between them. At the end you will find a bright star: Polaris. Make a fictitious line from Polaris down to the horizon, here you find the geographical north.

Southern Cross
Only at the southern hemisphere you can find the constellation Crux (also known as Southern Cross).
Its a small but bright constellation, somewhat kite-shaped, and it has a fifth star (Crucis).
Some countries; Australia, Brasil, New Zealand and Samoa, show this constellation in their national vlag.
The bright "Southern Cross" (Crux) points fairly accurately towards the south celestial pole.
Two of the stars of Crux, Alpha (Acrux) and Gamma (Gacrux), are commonly used to mark south. Following the line defined by the two stars for approximately 4.5 times the distance between them leads to a point close to the Southern Celestial Pole.
