If you are watching this page with some graphical browser, you probably
have guessed by now that I am a user of the
Debian
GNU/Linux distribution.
So your next question might just be: What is Linux? In that case I should
politely ask: Where have you been? :-)
Linux is a computer Operating System for various architectures, mainly
the Intel x86 series, Sun Sparc, Compaq (formerly DEC) Alpha, PowerPC
and loads of others. It runs on architectures varying from the Palm III
to parallized processor farms and is based on the UNIX operating system.
Although it cannot be called Unix formally, it complies with most
Unix standards, among which the POSIX standards.
Linux is actually only the kernel. It started out in 1991
as a hobby project
from the (then) college student
Linus
Torvalds. Since he dumped his source code on the Internet, this
hobby project got a little out of hand. :-)
Linux is normally distributed with many applications. The nice aspect here
is that Linux and most of its applications are
FREE.
Free here is in the context of free speech, not of free beer.
Free software is also often denoted as
Open Source software.
Besides Debian
there are a few other well known Linux Distributions, like
Red Hat,
SuSE and
Slackware. Also noteworthy are
some special purpose distributions, many of them consisting
of only one to three floppies. Examples here are
tomsrtbt,
The Linux Router Project and
Trinux.
Why Debian, you ask? Well, here are a few of my arguments:
