Charter: alt.support.srs

Purpose

The purpose of this newsgroup is to provide a supportive and informative environment for people who are undergoing or who have undergone sex reassignment surgery (SRS) and for their relatives and significant others.

The newsgroup is designed to support the medical needs of people undergoing sex reassignment surgery and to enhance their ability to integrate into society with their new physical and emotional selves.

On-Topic

Articles posted to this newsgroup should be about sex reassignment, about transgender-wide issues relevant to those undergoing sex reassignment surgery, or about the newsgroup itself. Anyone can post to this newsgroup.

Off-Topic

This newsgroup is not designed to meet any of the needs of people who can be considered transgendered but without aspiring sex reassignment surgery, such as cross-dressers and transgenderists.

This newsgroup is not the right place for topics primarily of sexuality or sexual orientation, for fiction with sex reassignment themes, or for blanket condemnations of transsexualism and sex reassignment.

Articles posted to this newsgroup must not be personal advertisements for relationships, sexual encounters and so on; also, no commercial or sex advertisements must be posted to this newsgroup (see below).

Retromoderation Policy

In order to maintain the quality and identity of the newsgroup, we reserve the right to retromoderate, over and above articles considered eligible for such by Usenet consensus such as ‘spam’ (ECP/EMP) and binaries posted to this non-binary newsgroup, the following and only the following:

Retromoderation on this newsgroup will be held publicly accountable.

End Charter

The above tagline and charter were culled form the initial newgroup control message for alt.support.srs, issued April 27, 1997 by Rosalind Hengeveld, then <r.hengeveld@tip.nl> (now <rosalind@xs4all.nl>). This newgroup control message is rendered below verbatim (from our Copy-Self file), followed by the original formal alt.config proposal for the newsgroup, to which it refers.

alt.support.srs Support and information on sex reassignment

Proposed in alt.config on April 20, 1997, in article <E8y80q.Jon@tip.nl>
(reference). As I explained in said proposal, alt.support.srs will replace
the existing and thriving newsgroup alt.support.sexreassign.

The reason is that alt.support.sexreassign, though a support-oriented
newsgroup on sex reassignment and definitely not a sex newsgroup, gets hit
by so much spam aimed specifically at all newsgroups with "sex" in their
name that we cannot keep up canceling it.

The newsgroup alt.support.sexreassign has 757 articles in Deja News for the
month-size period of March 21, 1997 through April 20. Of these, 131 are
cancel messages and 626 are non-control messages. Similar message traffic
is to be expected for its successor, the proposed alt.support.srs.

The rest of this message down to the signature consists of the full charter
for the newsgroup.

For your newsgroups file:
alt.support.srs Support and information on sex reassignment

This is a proposal to "move" the existing and thriving newsgroup
alt.support.sexreassign to the new name alt.support.srs by creating a new
newsgroup of the latter name and ultimately, when the new newsgroup has
adequate propagation, get rid of the old one by rmgrouping it.

The reason is that alt.support.sexreassign, though a support-oriented
newsgroup on sex reassignment and definitely not a sex newsgroup, gets hit
by so much spam aimed specifically at all newsgroups with "sex" in their
name that we cannot keep up canceling it.

The newsgroup alt.support.sexreassign has 757 articles in Deja News for the
month-size period of March 21, 1997 through today. Of these, 131 are
cancel messages and 626 are non-control messages. Similar message traffic
is to be expected for its successor, the proposed alt.support.srs.

I plan to send the first newgroup message a week from today.

The rest of this message down to the signature consists of the charter for
the new newsgroup, which has been up for discussion in the old one for
several weeks and can be said to have community approval, as can be said of
the very idea of moving the newsgroup.

Charter Amendments

A moratorium is currently in effect on third-party cancel activities directed exclusively or substantially at alt.support.srs.

Unless absolutely necessary, please refrain from cross-posting articles between alt.support.srs and other newsgroups. Cross-posting can blur the individuality and identity of a newsgroup with others that discuss related topics. If you feel you must cross-post, please set default follow-up to preferably a single newsgroup (or to ‘poster’) by supplying a Followup-To header, for example:

Newsgroups: soc.support.transgendered,alt.support.srs
Followup-To: soc.support.transgendered

Disclosure of any information on a poster that they obviously wish to keep private, is strongly frowned upon in alt.support.srs.

Posters are expected to abide by generally accepted rules of proper Usenet conduct.

Please do not follow up publicly to articles violating the charter, such as advertisements.
