The 2004 Korean League

This follow up to the 2003 Dream league is a team tournament modeled after a baseball league system. Eight teams of four players, each with their own sponsor, play an all-meet-all competition. After that the top 4 teams play some kind of knock out competition. There is one team match every week, the games are broadcast life on Baduk TV from Thursday to Sunday.

The Finals

The teams' scores are determined by 2 points for a win and 1 point for a tie. Now the top four teams will play a knock-out. Team 4 plays team 3, the winner plays team 2, etcetera. ParkLand has ended in 4th place (2 wins and 3 ties: 7 points). Bohae is third (1 win and 6 ties: 8 points). Pumyang is second (with 9 points) and HanGame is first (with 11 points). Games will continue the following three weekends. There is, of course, a tie break rule when the result is 2-2, but I have not yet been able to figure out the rules. We will see.

December 16-19, 2004

ParkLand takes the lead, winning the first two games. Then Bohae takes one back. But that was not enough, ParkLand won 3-1.

  • Board 4: (0-1) Paek Hong-seok 3d (Bohae -- W) vs Kim Hwan-su 1d (ParkLand)
  • Board 3: (0-2) Kim Myeong-wan 6d (Bohae -- B) vs Yi Yeong-ku 3d (ParkLand)
  • Board 2: (1-2) Weon Seong-chin 6d (Bohae -- W) vs An Cho-yeong 8d (ParkLand)
  • Board 1: (1-3) Song T'ae-kon 7d (Bohae -- B) vs Mok Chin-seok 8d (ParkLand)

December 23-26, 2004

ParkLand again takes the lead, winning the first two games. Will they win this match too? Yes, again it is 3-1.

  • Board 4: (1-0) Kim Hwan-su 1d (ParkLand -- W) vs Seo Pong-su 9d (Pumyang)
  • Board 3: (2-0) Yi Yeong-ku 3d (ParkLand -- B) vs Pak Cheong-sang 4d (Pumyang)
  • Board 2: (2-1) An Cho-hyeong 8d (ParkLand -- W) vs Yun Chun-sang 3d (Pumyang)
  • Board 1: (3-1) Mok Chin-seok 8d (ParkLand -- B) vs Yu Ch'ang-hyeok 9d (Pumyang)

Final: December 30, 2004 to January 2, 2005

And again ParkLand takes the lead, winning the first two games! But HanGame takes the next two games. I do not know what the tie breaker will be.

  • Board 4: (1-0) Kim Hwan-su 1d (ParkLand -- W) vs Hong Min-p'yo 4d (HanGame)
  • Board 3: (2-0) Yi Yeong-ku 3d (ParkLand -- B) vs Ryu Chae-hyeong (HanGame)
  • Board 2: (2-1) An Cho-hyeong 8d (ParkLand -- W) vs Kang Tong-yun 3d (HanGame)
  • Board 1: (2-2) Mok Chin-seok 8d (ParkLand -- B) vs Yi Se-tol 3d (HanGame)

Tie breaker: January 2, 2005

The tie breaker is a rengo between 2 players of each team. It seems to have been played the same day. It is an exciting 350 moves long game that finally goes to HanGame.

  • Tie breaker: (1-0) Yi Yeong-ku 3d and Mok Chin Seok 8d (ParkLand -- B) vs Hong Min-p'yo 4d and Yi Setil 9d (HanGame)
