The Polyhymnia Russian Connection.
Since 1990, the Polyhymnia recording team has taken part in numerous recording
productions in Russia. The first Russian recording was with Valery Gergiev
and the Kirov Orchestra (Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet on the Philips Classics
label) in the Mariinsky Theatre. It was followed by many orchestral and opera
recordings in St. Petersburg, as well as several productions in Moscow, including
Mussorgsky's Khovanschina and Tchaikovsky's Pique Dame (both recorded for
CD and video). Co-productions with NHK, the BBC, and the NOB brought many
well-known and lesser-known Russian operas, performed by the Kirov opera
and Valery Gergiev, to a large TV and CD audience.
Since the start of Polyhymnia International in 1998, our relationship with
the Russian music world has continued to grow. We travelled to Russia again
in 2003 for the label Pentatone Classics, recording the Russian National
Orchestra in the famous Tchaikovsky Conservatory Great Hall. In addition,
we made a live recording of a new production of Glinka's Russian and Lyudmilla
with the Bolshoi Theatre.
The latest news is that Polyhymnia has been asked to participate in all the
recordings for a new Russian record company, Essential Music. Essential Music
releases its disks in DSD Stereo and Surround on hybrid SA-CD, under the
label name Caro Mitis. It strives to release recordings with Russian artists
of famous and lesser-known Russian composers, in addition to other international
composers. Michael Serebryanyi, Essential Music's co-founder and director,
who produced all of the first recordings on Caro Mitis, along with three
Polyhymnia engineers, started recording in the summer of 2003. They have
already recorded 15 SA-CD productions together, of which seven have already
been released to much international acclaim.
In order to be able to deliver the highest quality recordings in Russia,
we have permanently stationed one of Polyhymnia's location recording sets,
complete with 8-track DSD capability or high resolution PCM and surround
monitoring, in Russia under the care of Essential Music. We are now able
to deliver recording services in Russia with the same high Polyhymnia standards,
competetive rates, and at short notice, without high equipment transport
costs. We have extensive experience in many recording locations in Moscow
and St Petersburg.
