Nürnberg (Nuremberg) Pub Guide
Bars - Beerhalls - Beer gardens

Introduction
This is not intended to be an exhaustive guide to the pubs and bars of Nuremberg. It's just a collection of a few addresses that might be of help to the beer traveller. If you discover any errors of ommissions, I would greatly appreciate it if you could E-mail me a correction.

Nuremberg, considering the tonnage of bombs heaped upon it during WW II, has a surprising number of medieval buildings, including an almost complete city wall. The distintive pink stone gives much of city a fairytale look (see crappy photo to the right).

Not far from Nürnberg Hauptbahnhof is the German national railway museum. It can't compete with the York Railway Museum in scale, but it's interesting enough. You can discover how the nazis pre-empted Harry Potter's knightbus with their lunatic scheme for a broad-gauge network served by triple-decker trains. Nuremberg is a very appropriate place to locate the museum, as it was between here and Fürth that Germany's first railway ran in the 1830's.

Despite being the capital of Frankenland and a decent-sized city (around 500,000 inhabitants), it's not the most lively place in the world. I've never had an easy time finding a pub with any sort of atmosphere in the city centre. At least these suggestions will give the traveller somewhere to start. The bars listed below include three brewpubs, one of which, Altstadthof, has a very good reputation.

The mass of Nuremberg pubs and bars serve beer from the town's one sizeable brewery, Tucher. It brews a range of bottom-fermenting beers in various Bavarian styles and a couple of top-feremnting Weizen (wheat) beers. Tucher's beers are nothing special, but pleasant enough for mass-produced lagers. Beer from the hundreds of small Franconian breweries just to the north are frustratingly tricky to find in the city of Nuremburg, except for a couple of specialist outlets.
I must thank John White for his tips and suggestions, which have made this page far more useful than I could have managed if left to my own resources.

A rather grand pub restaurant in a late 19th century building in the typical pinkish stone. It has high vaulted ceilings, long pine tables and wooden floors. There are a also few tables in the pedestrianised street outside. For those changing trains in Nuremberg, it's handily located just a few minutes' walk away from the main station.

As you might have guessed from the name, it's an Andechs tied house and has an appropriately wide draught beer selection (you can't get much wider than every single beer they brew).

The Barfüßer brewpub certainly has a great location. It's in the cellar of a massive rennaissance stone building that has one of the largest roofs I've ever seen.

The pub runs the whole length of the buildings which makes it quite a walk to the toilets at the rear. On your way, you'll have a chance to observe the gleaming copper brewing vessels. The inside is kitted out in pretty bog-standard beerhall style - long pine tables, red flagged floor, that sort of thing. Slightly disconcerting is the collection of British pub signs hanging from the ceiling.

The house beer is pretty decent and it's possible to have your own private 5 litre barrel on your table.

There are some tables outside in the pedestrianised shopping street on which the pub stands. The Hauptbahnhof is no more than a few minutes away.

These people are real specialists in traditional Franconian beer. The pub sells beers from 15 small breweries. From each brewery there is one draught beer from an oak barrel and others in the bottle. There is a chain of 3 or 4 pubs and a beer shop.

This chain sounds very interesting and I would be very grateful for any first-hand reports about their pubs or shop. E-mail me if you can help.
