I can't say that I know a great deal about the town of Linz, but it has some lovely baroque buildings in the centre which are well worth a look.

A few years ago it had no brewery, despite being in Oberösterreich, the Austrian state with the strongest beer tradition. There is now a pub brewery (Josef), giving the visitor the chance to sample some truly local beers.

According to my handy Czech pocket atlas, it's the third largest town in Austria and has a population of around 200,000. Well, you learn something new every day. But it must be a far-sized city, because the main railway station is an inconvenient tram ride away from the old centre.

On the way to town, you should be able to spot the Klosterhof, a huge Stiegl beerhall and beer garden (it'll be on your left).

These are the pubs I stumbled across in the city.

The front bar has stone pillars supporting a vaulted ceiling. Behind this is another room added much more recently. The furnishings are of simple brown wood with panelled walls and long fitted benches. In accordance with the very simple interior there is no bar - just a beer tap sticking out of the wall with a few shelves for glasses above it and a sink below. Pretty good food at reasonable prices.

A corner house which has been a pub since the 17th century. Rebuilt in 1957 and this is plainly visible from the style of the interior. A single room furnished with classy formica-topped tables (didn't you just love the 60's sense of style). It has a studenty atmosphere, with a pinball table and arty posters.

A classy beer/wine pub with an extensive and well-chosen selection of both of these drinks. Recently fitted out in the traditional central European style, the decor fits cosily into the old vaulted rooms. At the front is a small taproom with an L-shaped bar. Behind this is an even smaller room with a view onto the rear courtyard. The walls are decorated with watercolours or the Austrian countryside.

Pub/restaurant down an alleyway off the main square. There is a small drinking area by the bar on the ground floor while the restaurant is in a sort of half cellar. The furniture has an attractive pale wooden finish as do the floors and walls. It also calls itself the gallery, which means that there are lots of posy pictures around. Downstairs is a wine cellar.

It also sells Langhumer Most, the Austrian version of cider.

Bottled beers: Weizengold Klar and Hefeweizen.
