Collectable Dice Games

[chuckpint, rouven gehm, Lester Smith, randomfandom, dicemania, trolltq]

Dragon Dice (TSR) was one of the first collectable dice game, that set off a (small) range of other collectable dice games. Just like collectable trading cards, you start off buying a starter set, with a fixed number of dices, but randomly inserted (usually containing commons, uncommons & rares). As for all collectable games, each player needs his own set of dices. Although you have 'zones of play', you usually don't need much more than the dices. In addition you can buy (blind) booster packs.

Besides "dragon dice", a (small) number of collectable dice games were released. As a matter of facts, Lester Smith who first designed dragon dice released a second collectable dice game called "chaos progenitus".

Below find a limited number of collectable dice games that I am aware off:

Dragon Dice

Expensions (kickers): amazon & monsters, firewalkers, magestrom, undead, feral, swamp stalkers, frostwings, dragon shield, scalders, dragonkin, Dragonkin Champion set (treefolk (announced to be released)). New sets are to be released by SFR.

Released by TSR, taken over by WotC, re-released by SFR. Originally designed by Lester Smith.

The game that started the collectable dice games: dragon dice. It's propably the only game that had a major impact.

Dragon Dice is strategy game where players create mythical armies using dice to represent each troop.  The game combines strategy and skill as well as a little luck.  Each person tries to win the game by outmaneuvering the opponent and capture 2 terrains.  Of course eliminating your opponent completely is another acceptable way of winning.

It kind of died over the years, but was revived in 2000 by Will Lutz, currently CEO SFR, 100 N. McCormick, Oklahoma City, OK 73127, USA.

The object of the game is to destroy or subdue all your opponent's body parts. The game takes only a few minutes to learn, and one set contains 13 dice you can use straight from the start. [text from the box]. All dice are 6-sided and each of the three pictures is on that die twice and contain the following items

Each body part and item is available in 8 (9 = stone / special: see below) different color mixtures of plastic and ink.
The different fiends are (common to rare):
bulletFire Fiend (red plastic/yellow ink)

Each player builds a fiend out of various dice representing items and body parts. Then those fiends do battle in a contest of deadly combat.

In addition, ivory colored dice (stone) were released (promotional) in different countries. All share one specific power, based upon their ivory color and particular color of ink (colors: yellow, blue, red, gray, green, orange, brown, black).

Each basic pack appears to have 4 Fire fiend dice, 4 Frost, 3 Death, 1 Blood and 1 Lash. The booster box has 3 Fester, 2 Rot and 1 Stench, plus 2 basic breeds.

Expensions: Cities of Doom, Wilds of Doom, Doomcubes

Produced by Iron Crown Enterprises

[taken from chuckpint:] In Cities of Doom (COD), you play a character who is questing in the lands of Doom. As you travel from place to place you will be competing with your opponent as you try to become the first to gather the six tablets required to summon the lost Book of Ulingit. Cities of Doom is just your starting point for adventuring in the lands of Doom. Your playing experience can be enhanced by expansion products, including: the Wilds of Doom and Doom Cubes. The Wilds of Doom (WOD) is a boxed set of supplemental dice. In order to play, each player must have a copy of Cities of Doom (COD), but only one copy of Wilds of Doom is needed. Each pack of Doom Cubes contains eight dice randomly selected from a set of over a hundred different dice: random action dice, special fighting dice, etc. Each player may expand his pool of Dicemaster dice; however, in any given game each player may only use up to a fixed number of these dice. Which dice you choose to use becomes an important element of the game.

Star Trek The Next Generation

Released by Five Rings (1996)

Collectible Dice Game. This game comes with a game board.

In the game, the players take the role of captains of starships in the futuristic universe of the 24th century. Each player commands one ship. The starships in the game are drawn from those depicted in the television series STAR TREK: The Next Generation, and STAR TREK: FIRST CONTACT, the motion picture. The objective of the game is to engage the opposing ships in battle, outfight them, and ultimately destroy them.

During the game, the players allocate available power from the Engineering system to activate and use various ship systems. These systems include weapons, damage repair, sensors, shield reinforcement, and special options. As ships take damage, their abilities become reduced, until they become so damaged that the ship suffers a warp core breach and is destroyed and removed from play. The last player in the game is the winner.

This game is currently DEAD. You can buy starters / boosters / expensions from Ebay or private persons.

Games comes with commons ($2), uncommons ($4) and rares ($8) As the company disolved, a new company (prism-games) will re-release the game in non-collectable form later, including a miniature (see picture). This game will be called 'fantasy stones'.
