What does it do?
Exact bearoff calculates the winning chances, equity and doubling decisions
of bearoff positions in backgammon.
The program starts by computing all possible bearoff positions for up to a certain number of checkers. This takes a long time, but after that every position will be stored on hard-disk and can be used for instantaneous lookup.
Creating the databases
In the file menu, select 'create databases'. Select the number of checkers
you you want to compute, for instance: 9 checkers at distance 6, and 15 at
distance 4. After you press 'OK', ExactBearoff will fill your harddisk with
the results. This can take several hours. For practical reasons, the size of
the databases should not exceed your physical memory (RAM) by a factor 2 to 3.
Setting up the board
Left clicking somewhere on the board adds a checker, right clicking
removes one. In the options menu you can determen whether you want to play
to the left or right.
Accuracy
All values are computed with an accuracy of 7 digits. You can change
the number of digits that is shown in the options menu. The program
considers all possible dice throws and double/redouble sequences right
to the end of the game.
Equity
The program computes the following values:
Winning percentage:
The chance in % that one
wins the game, not considering the cube.
Cubeless equity:
Equity is the average profit
you expect to make in a given position: the winning chance minus your losing
chance. The cubeless equity does not consider the doubling cube.
Roller's cube equity
The equity if the roller is holding
the doubling cube.
Centered cube equity
The equity if the doubling
cube is still centered.
Opponent's cube equity
The equity if your opponent
is holding the cube.
Roller's cube, action
Shows if one has to redouble
if he already owns the cube.
Centered cube, action
Shows if one has to double
if the cube is still centered.
Best move
Show the best moves and their equity. Note that this is the equity
before any doubling.
Harddisk-usage
There are very many backgammon bearoff positions. Exact backgammon
stores all these positions on hard-disk. The amount of harddisk space grows
exponentially with the number of checkers. For 5 checkers on each side
this takes 3.2 Mb of space, for 8 checkers 137 Mb and for all 15 checkers
44 Gb. This limits the number of checkers the program can comfortably handle
to about 10, on a computer with 128 Mb memory.
