Leaves
show looped networks may be better than branched
The curvy, connected
leaf veins found in some plants are an efficient way to circumvent damaged
areas and channel nutrients, report researchers of the Rockefeller University
in New York City. The researchers compared how efficiently different branching
patterns could do the job of leaf veins, which move water and nutrients
around. In the simulations, the looped network performed better than non-looped
ones.
Loop networks aren’t
found just in tree leaves. Blood vessels in the retina, structural veins
in insect wings and the architecture of certain corals are all based on
loops. Understanding the benefits of such networks might lead to more efficient
man-made network designs. Simulation

vein network grows around a damaged spot + Ginkgo leaf: straight veins
are stopped by a damaged spot.

Study:
Ginkgo and cognitive decline in older adults
Research at the
University of Pittsburgh analyzed outcomes from the Ginkgo Evaluation of
Memory (GEM) study to determine if Ginkgo biloba slowed the rate of cognitive
decline in older adults who had normal cognition or mild cognitive impairment
at the beginning of the study. The researchers found no evidence that Ginkgo
biloba slows the rate of cognitive decline in older adults.

Ginkgo
and loss of smell
At Seoul National
University, South Korea, the efficacy of a treatment with glucocorticoids,
Ginkgo biloba, and mometasone furoate nasal spray was investigated in order
to restore the sense of smell lost by upper respiratory infections. 71
patients were treated. The researchers concluded that adding Ginkgo biloba
might be helpful in improving odor identification. Read more

Ginkgo
and radiation damage
The leaves of the
Gingko biloba tree may protect cells from radiation damage, according to
a study published in the International Journal of Low Radiation.
Researchers in Korea found Ginkgo biloba helps through its free-radical
scavenging and antioxidant properties to reduce the side effects in cancer
patients undergoing radiotherapy. Read more here(International

Ginkgo bicycle-rack in Memphis, Tennessee
Artist Yvonne Bobo
recently finished installing a green rack in a ginkgo-leaf motif.
Eventually, there
are to be a dozen of the fine-art bike racks around the neighborhood 'Cooper-Young'
in Midtown Memphis.
Cooper street is
lined with Ginkgo trees, so planners decided to use the fan-shaped leaf
pattern.
The installation
of bike racks is part of a broader campaign to further bicycling in Memphis,
for aesthetic, health and environmental reasons.

Old
Ginkgo saved in South Korea
Two apartment buildings
in Seoul, the crowded capital, will be torn down to save an 840-year-old
ginkgo, the newspaper JoongAng Ilbo reported. The 82-foot tree is the oldest
tree in Seoul and is venerated by residents in the Dobong district who
bring fruit and other offerings once a year and pray for their safety.
It also attracts pregnant women who believe it will help them have a boy.
With approval from the residents, the district government will spend $4.3
million to demolish the apartment buildings, whose foundations are interfering
with the tree’s roots, the newspaper said. A park will be built around
the ginkgo. More...
