O barco vai de saída

O barco vai de saída
Adeus ao cais de Alfama
Se agora ou de partida
Levo-te comigo ó cana verde
Lembra-te de mim ó meu amor
Lembra-te de mim nesta aventura
P'ra lá da loucura
P'ra lá do Equador

Ah mas que ingrata ventura
Bem me posso queixar
da Pátria a pouca fartura
Cheia de mágoas ai quebra-mar
Com tantos perigos ai minha vida
Com tantos medos e sobressaltos
Que eu já vou aos saltos
Que eu vou de fugida

Sem contar essa história escondida
Por servir de criado essa senhora
Serviu-se ela também tão sedutora
Foi pecado
Foi pecado
E foi pecado sim senhor
Que vida boa era a de Lisboa

Gingão de roda batida
corsário sem cruzado
ao som do baile mandado
em terra de pimenta e maravilha
com sonhos de prata e fantasia
com sonhos da cor do arco-íris
desvaira se os vires
desvairas magias

Já tenho a vela enfunada
marrano sem vergonha
judeu sem coisa nem fronha
vou de viagem ai que largada
só vejo cores ai que alegria
só vejo piratas e tesouros
são pratas, são ouros
são noites, são dias

Vou no espantoso trono das águas
vou no tremendo assopro dos ventos
vou por cima dos meus pensamentos
arrepia
arrepia
e arrepia sim senhor
que vida boa era a de Lisboa

O mar das águas ardendo
o delírio do céu
a fúria do barlavento
arreia a vela e vai marujo ao leme
vira o barco e cai marujo ao mar
vira o barco na curva da morte
e olha a minha sorte
e olha o meu azar

e depois do barco virado
grandes urros e gritos
na salvação dos aflitos
estala, mata, agarra, ai quem me ajuda
reza, implora, escapa, ai que pagode
rezam tremem heróis e eunucos
são mouros são turcos
são mouros acode!

Aquilo é uma tempestade medonha
aquilo vai p'ra lá do que é eterno
aquilo era o retrato do inferno
vai ao fundo
vai ao fundo
e vai ao fundo sim senhor
que vida boa era a de Lisboa

Porque não me vês

Meu amor adeus
Tem cuidado
Se a dor é um espinho
Que espeta sózinho
Do outro lado
Meu bem desvairado
Tão aflito
Se a dor é um dó
Que desfaz o nó
E desata um grito
Um mau olhado
Um mal pecado
E a saudade é uma espera
É uma aflição
Se é Primavera
É um fim de Outono
Um tempo morno
É quase Verão
Em pleno Inverno
É um abandono
Porque não me vês
Maresia
Se a dor é um ciúme
Que espalha um perfume
Que me agonia
Vem me ver amor
De mansinho
Se a dor é um mar
Louco a transbordar
Noutro caminho
Quase a espraiar
Quase a afundar

A Índia.”

A guerra é a guerra

Salto no escuro
Entre dentes trago a faca
E nos meus olhos coloridos
Juro
Vem ver o fogo no mar
Os peixes a arder
Ó Ana vem ver
Ó Ana vem ver
Ó Ana vem ver
Voando em arco
Esgueiro o corpo num balanço
Como um piloto do inferno
Assalto
Nas asas guerreiras de um anjo
Seja louvado
Atacamos mui baralhados
Como um bando endiabrado
Por Jesus na sua cruz
Chora por mim ó minha infanta
Escorre sangue o céu e a terra
Ah pois por mais que seja santa
A guerra é a guerra

Coro:
Malaca Malaca
A guerra é a guerra
No céu e na terra
Nos dentes a faca
Avanço avanço
A guerra é a guerra
No céu e na terra
Balanço balanço
Cruzado cruzado
A guerra é a guerra
No céu e na terra
O mais enfeitado
Largar largar
O fogo no mar

Seja bendito
De todos o mais enfeitado
Olha p’ra mim o mais guerreiro
Ao vivo
Olha p’ra mim o teu amado
E o céu a arder
Ó Ana vem ver
Ó Ana vem ver
Ó Ana vem ver
Barcos em chamas
Erguidas
Parecia coisa sonhada
Queimados
Os gritos horrendos da besta
Ferida
E lá dentro ardiam homens
Encurralados
E cá fora à cutilada
Decepados
P’la calada
Pelos peitos já desfeitos
Chora por mim ó minha infanta
Escorre sangue o céu e a terra
Ah pois por mais que seja santa
A guerra é a guerra

(coro)

Foge saloio
Eh parolo
Aguenta António de Faria
E a fidalguia
Todo o massacre
E todo o desconsolo
Que já lá vem o Coja Acém
E o mar a arder
Ó Ana vem ver
Ó Ana vem ver
Ó Ana vem ver
Diz-nos adeus o pirata
O labrego
De cima daquele mastro
Trocista e airoso
Mostrando o traseiro cafre
Preto escuro de um negro
Levando-nos coiro e tesouro
Rindo de gozo
Perdeu-se o resto na molhada
Pelo estrondo
Na quebrada
No edema da gangrena
Chora por mim ó minha infanta
Escorre sangue o céu e a terra
Ah pois por mais que seja santa
A guerra é a guerra

As vagas levantadas

Eh bruto corta-me esses mastros
Aguenta a popa e vira a proa
Ajusta-me esses calabretes
Baldeia fazendas à toa
Descarrega esse convés
Saltam braços
Voam pés
Vomitam pragas num estardalhaço
Os corpos atirados em pedaços
Dão à costa
Pela encosta
Choramos a nossa perdição
Dando muitas bofetadas
Em nós próprios sim senhor
Metidos num charco de água
Gritamos uma reza ao salvador

(6x) O escuro...

Salve-se agora quem puder
Por entre feridos e aflitos
Nas costas banhadas em sangue
Mordem atabões e mosquitos
Gritam mudos
Ouvem surdos
Em trejeitos absurdos
Um marinheiro de cabeça toda aberta
C’os miolos todos podres quase inerte
Num boeiro
Ai que cheiro
E abraçado a mim logo expirou
Com provas de bom cristão
O que muito nos consolou
Não ter de o levar às costas
Enterrado
Abençoado lá ficou

(6x) O escuro...

Estando nós em grande perigo
Num enorme desvario
Nadaram dois marinheiros
E a pouco mais de meio rio
Arremeteram conta eles

O medo ronda-me os sentidos
Por abaixo da minha pele
Ao esgueirar-se viscoso
Escorre pegajoso
E sai
Pelos meus poros
Pelos meus ais
Ele penetra-me nos ossos
Ao derramar-se sedento
Nas entranhas sinuosas
Entre as vísceras mordendo
Salta e espalha-se no ar
Vai e volta
Delirante
Tão delirante
É como um sonho acordado
Esse vulto besuntado
A revolver-se no lodo
A deslizar de uma larva
Emergindo lá no fundo
Tenho medo ó medo
Leva tudo é tudo teu
Mas deixa-me ir

Arrasta-me à côncava do fundo
Do grande lago da noite
Cruzando as grades de fogo
Entre o Céu e o Inferno
Até à boca escancarada
Esfaimada
Atrás de mim
Atrás de mim
É como um sonho acordado
Esses olhos no escuro
Das carpideiras viúvas
Pelo pai assassinado
Desventrado por seu filho
Que possuiu lascivo
A sua própria mãe
E sua amante

Meu amor quando eu morrer
Ó linda
Veste a mais garrida saia
Se eu vou morrer no mar alto
Ó linda
E eu quero ver-te na praia
Mas afasta-me essas vozes
Linda

A ilha

Olhamos tudo em silêncio
Na linha da praia
De olhos na noite suspensos
Do céu que desmaia
Ai Lua Nova de Outubro
Trazes as chuvas e ventos
A alma a segredar
A boca a murmurar
Descem em nuvens de assombro
Tainhas e bagres
Se as aves embalam os peixes
Em certos milagres
Levita-se o corpo da alma
No choro das ladainhas
Na reza dos condenados
Nas pragas dos sitiados
Da ilha dos ladrões
Quem sai?
E leva este recado ao cais
São penas são sinais
Adeus

Livra-me da fome
Que me consome
Deste frio
Livra-me do mal
Desse animal
Que é este cio
Livra-me do fado
E se puderes abençoado
Leva-me a mim a voar
Sobre o mar

Santo anjo
Vem
Peixe fresco
Cai
Meu arcanjo
Vai
E leva-me a voar
Pelo ar

Ó milhafre lindo
Ó linda gaivota
Dá-me o teu peixe
À mão
Coração bem-vindo
A voar pelo ar
Como se houvesse um encanto
Uma estranha magia
O Sol lentamente flutua
Nas margens do dia
Despe o meu corpo corsário
Seca-me a veia maruja
Morde-me o peito aos ais
Das brigas dos punhais
Andamos nus e descalços
Amantes sedentos
Se o véu da noite se deita
Na curva do tempo
Ai Lua Nova de Outubro
Os medos são meus
Das chuvas e ventos
Da alma a segredar
Da boca a murmurar
Adeus

Certo!

1º pirata:
Sonhei muitos muitos anos
Por esta hora chegada
De Lisboa para a Índia
Vou agora de abalada
Mas em frente de Sesimbra
Logo um corsário Francês
Nos atirou para Melides
Com o barco feito em três
E por Deus e por El-rei
Que grande volta que eu dei

Ó é tão lindo
Ó é tão lindo

Ó ai meu bem...

Ena que alegria enorme
Uns mais ou menos conforme

Certo!

2o pirata:
Mas que terras
Maravilha
Mais parece uma aguarela
Que eu vejo da minha barca
Branca azul e amarela
A Lua dormia ali
E com o Sol em tal namoro
Que as montanhas estavam prenhas
E pariam prata e ouro
Com Jesus no coração
Faz as contas ó Fernão!

Ó é tão lindo
Ó é tão lindo

Ó ai meu bem...

Mais cuidado no bailado
Que andamos tão baralhados

Certo!

1o pirata:
Nunca vi bichos medonhos
Tão soltos e atrevidos
Que nos fomos logo a pique
Com o bafo dos seus grunhidos
E todo nu sobre um penedo
De mãos dadas a rezar
Até me tremiam as carnes
Por os não ter no lugar
Ainda por cima a chover
Vejam lá o meu azar

Ó é tão lindo
Ó é tão lindo

Ó ai meu bem...

Eh valente rapazinho
A cantar ao desafio

2o pirata
Matei mouros malabares
Quem foi à guerra fui eu
Afundei grandes armadas
Nunca ninguém me venceu
Mas ao ver o cu de um mouro
Foi tal susto grande e forte
Qu’inté a bexiga mijei
E de todo estive à morte
Siga a roda sem parar
Que a gente vai a voar

Ó é tão lindo
Ó é tão lindo

Olha o fado

Eu cá sou dos Fonsecas
Eu cá sou dos Madureiras
De ferro o puro sangue
O que me corre nas veias
Nasci da paixão temporal
Do porto dos vendavais
Cresço no fragor da luta
Numa força bruta
P’ra além dos mortais
Mas tenho muitas saudades
Certas penas e desejos
E aquela louca ansiedade
Como um pecado
Meu amor se te não vejo

Olha o fado

Ora é tão vingativo
Ora é tão paciente
Amanhã é comedor
Hoje abstinente
Mentiroso alcoviteiro
Doce e verdadeiro
Uma vez conquistador
Outra vez vencido
Amanhã é navegante
Hoje é desvalido
Sensual aventureiro
Doido e bandoleiro
Somos capitães
Somos Albuquerques
Nós somos leões
Os lobos do mar
De olhos pregados nos céus
De cima dos chapitéus

Somos capitães
Somos Albuquerques

A côncava funda
Da casa do fumo
Cheguei perto do sonho
Flutuando nas águas
Dos rios dos céus
Escorre o gengibre e o mel
Sedas porcelanas
Pimenta e canela
Recebendo ofertas
De músicas suaves
Em nossas orelhas
Leve como o ar
A terra a navegar
Meu bem como eu vou
Por este rio acima

Por este rio acima
Os barcos vão pintados
De muitas pinturas
Descrevem varandas
E os cabelos de Inês
Desenham memórias
Ao longo da água
Bosques enfeitiçados
Soutos laranjeiras
Campinas de trigo
Amores repartidos
Afagam as dores
Quando são sentidos
Monstros adormecidos
Na esfera do fogo
Como nasce a paz
Por este rio acima

Meu sonho
Quanto eu te quero
Eu nem sei
Eu nem sei
Fica um bocadinho mais
Que eu também
Que eu também
Meu bem

Por este rio acima
Isto que é de uns
Também é de outros
Não é mais nem menos
Nascidos foram todos
Do suor da fêmea
Do calor do macho
Aquilo que uns tratam
Não hão-de tratar
Outros de outra coisa
Pois o que vende o fresco
Não vende o salgado
Nem também o seco
Na terra em harmonia
Perfeita e suave
Das margens do rio
Por este rio acima

Meu sonho...

Por este rio acima
Deixando para trás
A côncava funda
Da casa do fumo
Cheguei perto do sonho
Flutuando nas águas
Dos rios dos céus
Escorre o gengibre e o mel
Sedas porcelanas
Pimenta e canela
Recebendo ofertas
De músicas suaves
Em nossas orelhas
Leve como o ar
A terra a navegar
Meu bem como eu vou
Por este rio acima

O cortejo dos penitentes

No cortejo dos penitentes
Vão culpados pecadores da gula
Vão culpados da sensualidade
Castigados até à medula
Vão os tíbios e frouxos no amor
Imaculados como o Criador
Vão culpados por abstinência
Vão culpados das suas carências
No cortejo dos penitentes
Os homens cortam suas próprias carnes
São ofertas que fazem aos céus
Ao mais alto de todos os céus
No cortejo dos penitentes
Os sacerdotes da austera vida
Vão contentes e muito enfeitados
Sobre as cinzas dos sacrificados
E cantam louvores
Ao Deus

Abranda Senhor
A pena dos mortos
P’ra que te louvem
Com sono quieto

No cortejo
Os penitentes
Bebem tragos da bebida amarga
Da urina que depois vomitam
Pela noite mal aventurada
No cortejo
Os penitentes
Comem postas de sangue coalhado
Da sangria dos outros romeiros
Suavemente mutilados
E cantam louvores

Navegar, navegar!

Navegar navegar
Mas ó minha cana verde
Mergulhar no teu corpo
Entre quatro paredes
Dar-te um beijo e ficar
Ir ao fundo e voltar
Ó minha cana verde
Navegar navegar

Quem conquista sempre rouba
Quem cobiça nunca dá
Quem oprime tiraniza
Naufraga mil vezes
Bonita eu sei lá
Já vou de grilhões nos pés
Já vou de algemas nas mãos
De colares ao pescoço
Perdido e achado
Vendido em leilão
Eu já fui a mercadoria
Lá na praça do Mocá
Quase às avé-marias
Nos abismos do mar

Já é tempo de partir
Adeus morenas de Goa
Já é tempo de voltar
Tenho saudades tuas
Meu amor
De Lisboa
Antes que chegue a noite
Que vem do cabo do mundo
Tirar vidas à sorte
Do fraco e do forte
Do cimo e do fundo
Trago um jeito bailarino
Que apesar de tudo baila
No meu olhar peregrino

Lembra-me um sonho lindo

Quando às vezes ponho diante dos olhos

(Translation: Pedro Sorodio)

The ship is leaving

The ship is leaving
Goodbye to Alfama's peer
If now or leaving
I take you with me oh green cane
Remember me my love
Remember me on this adventure
Beyond madness
Beyond Equator

Oh, but what an ungrateful fortune
I can very well complaint
of the Motherlands little abundance
Full of sorrow, oh breakwater
With so many dangers, oh my life
With so many fears and sudden surprises
That I am already running
That I am already running away

Without telling that hidden story
For being a servant of the lady
She served herself as well, so seductive
It was a sin
It was a sin
And it was obviously a sin,
What a good life that one was in Lisbon

Quarreller of beaten wheel
pirate without a gold coin
to the sound of the ordered dance
on the land of pepper and wonder
with dreams of silver and fantasy
with dreams of the colour of the rainbow
madden if you see them
you bewilder witchcrafts

I'm already on full sail
unashamed excommunicated
Jew without a thing or pillow-case
I'm on a journey, oh what a sailing
I only see colours, oh such joy
I only see pirates and treasures
they're silver, they're gold,
they're nights, they're days

I'm on the amazing throne of the waters
I'm on the astonishing blow of the winds
I'm above my thoughts
it shivers
it shivers
and it shivers without a doubt
what a good life that one was in Lisbon

The sea of the waters burning
the delusion of the sky
the fury of the windward
harness the sail and go to the wheel, sailor
turn the ship and fall to the sea, sailor
turn the ship on the curve of death
and just look at my luck
and just luck at my misfortune

and after the ship is turned
big roars and screams
on the rescue of the troubled
burst, kill, grab, oh, who'll rescue me
pray, beg, escape, oh, such spree
heroes and eunuchs pray and tremble
they're moors, they're Turks
they're moors, help!

That is a dreadful storm
that goes beyond what is eternal
that was the portrait of Hell
it sinks
it sinks
and it sinks like a heavy stone
what a good life that one was in Lisbon

Translation: Pedro big

Why do you not see me

My love farewell
Be careful
If the pain is a thorn
That stings all alone
On the other side
My dear confused
So grieved
If pain is pity
That unties the knot
And releases a scream
A wicked spell
A wrong sin
And the yearning(1) is a wait
It´s a grief
If it’s Spring
It’s an Autumn’s end
A tepid weather
It’s almost Summer
In broad Winter
It’s an abandonment
Why do you not see me
Seawater smell
If pain is a jealousy
That spreads a perfume
That agoniates me
Come see me my love
Softly
If pain is a sea
Mad overflowing
In another way
Almost casting ashore
Almost sinking
And the yearning is a wait
It´s a grief
If it’s Spring
It’s a Autumn’s end
A tepid weather
It’s almost Summer
In broad Winter
It’s an abandonment

Note: The journey's diary, Fernão Mendes Pinto.
“My wish would be to get out of this journey very rich in a short time without thinking how dangerous I would then live, relied in this promess and deceived by this hope. In the city of Diu(2), war was being prepared because of the suspicion that the turkish fleet was coming. I left Portugal on the Spring and, sailing every ship in his root, arrived to the sea on the other side of the ocean. India”
(1) The correct meaning of “saudade” is something like “longing to see (something or someone)”
(2) A harbour in India, portuguese colony from the XVI century until the 60s

Translation: Pedro big

the war is the war

I jump on the the dark
Between the teeth the knife
And in my coloured eyes
I swear
Come see the fire in the sea
The fishes burning
Anna come see
Anna come see
Anna come see
Flying across
I sidle my body in a swing
Like a pilot from hell
I charge
Upon the warrior wings of an angel
Praise him
We attack very disorded
Like a demoniac gang
For Jesus in his cross
Cry for me my lady
It drains blood from sky and land
For as much as it can be holy
The war is the war

Choir:
Malaca Malaca
The war is the war
On sky and on land
In the teeths the knife
I move on I move on
The war is the war
On sky and on land
I swing i swing
Crusader crusader
The war is the war
On sky and on land
The most decorated
Drop drop
The fire on the sea

Bless him
Of all the most decorated
Look at me the top warrior
Live
Look at me your loved one
And the sky burning
Anna come see
Anna come see
Anna come see
Ships in flames
High
It looked like a dreamed thing
Burned
The horrifying screams of the beast
Injured
And inside men were burning
Trapped
And here outside by slashes
Maimed
On the sly
By the breasts, already teared apart
Cry for me my lady
It drains blood from sky and land
For as much as it can be holy
The war is the war

(choir)

Run villager
Peasant
Hang on António de Faria
And the nobility
All the massacre
And all the sorrow
Here comes the Coja Acém
And the sea burning
Anna come see
Anna come see
Anna come see
He waves goodbye the pirate
The filthy
From upon that mast
Scofferly and elegantly
Showing us the behind caffre
Black darkness of a negro
Taking skin and treasure from us
Laughing of joy
The rest was lost in the crowd
By the crash
On the open
In the edema of the gangrene
Cry for me my lady
It drains blood from sky and land
For as much as it can be holy
The war is the war

Note: The journey's diary, Fernão Mendes Pinto.
“From Diu I shipped into the strait of Meca, from here we went to Maçuá and from there, by land, to the Kingdom of Preste João(1). I passed to the Kingdom of the Batas and in a hurry through the Kingdom of Quedá, as I will notice further on. In Patane I met António de Faria(2), commander who I served at the merchandise sale. We were attacked by (the dog) Coja Acém, feared pirate since Heitor da Silveira(3) had killed his father and two brothers. Because of this, Coja Acém had promessed Mafamede(4) to kill all of the generation of Malaca. In small pinnaces, I too faced the great fleet of the turk which was reeling on our track with coloured sails and many silk flags.”

Of a miserable shipwreck we passed

The darkness is very big
The weather is very cold
The sea is very thick
The wind is very hard
The waters are crossed
The waves are rash

Hey rough boy cut on that masts
Hold the back and turn the stern
Regulate those cables
Drop the goods anyhow
Unload this deck
Arms jump
Legs fly
Spew curses in a rattle
The bodies thrown in pieces
Run ashore
Up the hill
We cry our doom
Giving many slaps
In our own faces yes sir
Stucked in a puddle of water
We scream a pray to the saviour

The darkness... (x6)

Save himself now who can
Between the injured and the troubled
In the blood-soaked backs
Bite flies and mosquitos
Dumbs scream
Deafs hear
In absurd twists
A sailor with his head all opened up
His brains all wrotten almost inert
In a vagrancy
What a smell
And holded to me soon he expired
Giving proofs of good cristian
Which were of great consolation for us
Don´t have to carry him on our backs
Buried
Blessed there he remained

The darkness... (x6)

as we were in great danger
In a huge madness
Two sailors swam
And a bit past half river
Two very big lizards
Rushed over them
And teared them to pieces
Which sight amazed us
Oh help
Oh I’ll die
We sunk imediately
And suddenly to the bottom
With a black by the hand
So astounded and quiet
But in his mind singing prays

“After leaving the Kingdom of Aaru, sended there by the commander of Malaca delivering assistance from this king against the achém(1) enemy, and when we rounded the islets of Anchepisão, a thunderstorm was given to us, so great that it overwhelmed us with three leaks near the keel. The five who escaped alive, spended the rest of the night squatted on top of some rocks, making a great lamentation over them, along with many slaps that ones and others gave on themselves, because of the sad achievement of our doom.

(1) Coja Acém? In the preceding music Fausto refers
to the pirate Coja Acém. Possibly "the enemy achém" is the same person.

As an awake dream

As if the entire Earth
Ran behind me
Fear watches my senses
Underneath my skin
While sneaking slimy
It flows sticky
And it leaves
Through my pores
Through my interjections
It penetrates my bones
As it spills parched
On the sinuous entrails
Between the bowels biting
Jumps and spreads itself in the air
It goes and comes back
Delirious
So delirious
It is as an awake dream
That indistinct figure greased
Revolving itself in the mud
Sliding from a worm
Emerging from the bottom
I'm scared oh fear
Take it all it's all yours
But let me go

Drag me to the concavity of the bottom
Of the great lake of the night
Crossing the crates of fire
Between Heaven and Hell
To the wide open mouth
Hungry
Behind me
Behind me
It is as an awake dream
Those eyes in the dark
Of the mourning widows
For the murdered father
Gutted by his own son
That in lust possessed
His own mother
And his lover

My love when I die
Oh beautiful
Put on the most coloured skirt
If I die at sea
Oh beautiful
And I want to see you on the beach
But put away those voices
Beautiful

You're afraid of the living
And of the severed dead
By their feet and by their hands
And by their neck and by their chests
Until the thread of the loin
That's how your flesh shivers
Fernão Mendes

Note: The journey's diary, Fernão Mendes Pinto.
As an awake dream "Aboard a jurupango, with the moor Coja Ale, bailiff of the captain of Malaca, we appeared on the river of Parles in the realm of Quedá. In those days, the king was celebrating with great splendour and funeral pomp the exequies of the death of his father, that he had stabbed in order to marry his mother that was already pregnant of him. To avoid rumours he made a public announcement that under severe penalties (death) no one should talk about was already done. But Coja Ale had by nature a loose tongue and dared to speak whatever crossed his mind. And that was how I, arrested by soldiers, was taken to the king and looking to where he waved me from, I saw lying on the floor a bunch of dead bodies in a pool of blood. Among them was the moor Coja Ale. For more than an I hour I stood astonished, under a fan, not being allowed to speak, tossed at the feet of the elephant on which the king was. After having been forgiven because of the clumsy excuses and lamentations, but that came very in handy at the time, I set sail very fast because of the great fear and risk of death in which I'd been".

The island

Silently we see all
On the beach line
Looking hard, in the night
To the fainting sky
Oh New Moon of October
You bring rain and wind
The soul whispering
The mouth murmuring
Grey mullets and catfishes
Come down in astonishing clouds
If the birds rock the fishes
In certain miracles
The body lifts up of his soul
In the litanies cry
In the pray of the doomed
In the curses of the besieged
From the island of the thieves
Who leaves?
And takes this message to the peer
They're sorrows they're signs
Farewell

Release me of the hunger
That consumes me
Of this cold
Set me free of this evil
Of this animal
That is this rut
Release me of this fate
And if you can blessed
Take me flying
Over the sea

Holy angel
Come
Fresh fish
Fall
My archangel
Go
And take me flying
Through the air

Oh beautiful kite
Oh beautiful sea-gull
Give me your fish
In the hand
Welcome heart
Flying through the sky
Like if there would be a charm
A strange magic
The Sun floats slowly
In the banks of the day
Strips my corsair body
Dries my sailor vein
Bites my aching breast
From the dagger fights
We go around naked and bare-foot
Thursty lovers
If the night's veil lays
On the curve of time
Oh New Moon of October
The fears are mine
From the rain and the wind
From the soul whispering
From the mouth murmuring
Farewell

Note: The journey's diary, Fernão Mendes Pinto.
"With António de Faria we sailed towards the island of Ainão, hunting the pirate Coja Acém, who had taken us all our belongings. We struggled and put under torment the pirate Similau and the caffre Bastião. We sailed down the river Tinacoreu and we arrived to the inlet of Conchihina where we met people reverent to the bearded nation that we were. We heard news of the Coja Acém from the pearl fishers of the king of China. And, being allready seven and a half months on trip, from river to river, the destiny wanted that a bad weather came, so stormy of rains and winds that all the four ships came to shore and splitted to pieces. Put on this misery, we walked naked and bare-foot through that beach and trough the woods of the thieve's island. Weakened by the hunger, feverish and allready distrusting on every human remedy, a kite passed incidentally by and dropped a fresh mullet. We climbed a hill and saw a great amount of those kites that came down to the water and catched many of those fishes, that falled from their claws with the screams that we gave."

Flying above the waters

Oh my dear
How does the dancer dances
Oh my love
The caravel too
Oh pretty
Oh it’s from the sorrows
From the griefs
Being we like the sardines
Flying above the waters

Go around who wants to
And say what has to be said

Right!

1st pirate:
I dreamed many many years
For this hour that arrived
From Lisbon to India
I’m about to leave
But in front of Sesimbra
A french corsair
Trew us to Melides
With the boat teared in three (parts)
And by god and by the king
What a long way I made

Oh it’s so beautiful
Oh it’s so beautiful

Oh my dear...

Wow what a great joy
Some more some less it depends

Right!

2nd pirate:
What marvellous
Lands
It seems like a painting
That I see from my ship
White blue and yellow
The moon slept there
And with the Sun in such a courtship
That the mountains were pregnant
And were delivering silver and gold
With Jesus in the heart
Make the calculations Fernão

Oh it’s so beautiful
Oh it’s so beautiful

Oh my dear...

More caution in the dancing
That we are so confused

Right!

1st pirate:
I’ve never seen fearful beast
So free and daring
That we sank right to the bottom
With the breath of their grunts
And split naked on a rock
The hands togethered praying
Even my fleshes shivered
Because of not having them in the place
In top of all it was raining
Just look at my misfortune

Oh it’s so beautiful
Oh it’s so beautiful

Oh my dear...

Hey brave boy
Challenging the singers

2nd pirate:
I killed moors malabars
It was I who went to war
I sank great fleets
Nobody ever defeated me
But as I saw one moor’s ass
It was a frightning so big and strong
I even pissed my bladder
And I’ve been near death
Follow the cirle without stopping
That we go flying

Oh it’s so beautiful
Oh it’s so beautiful

Look at the fado

I am from the Fonsecas(2)
I am from the Madureiras(2)
of iron made the pure blood
that runs in my veins
I was born from the temporary passion
From the stormy harbour
I grow with the noise of the fight
In a brutal force
Beyond the mortals
But I long for many things(3)
Some sorrows and wishes
And that crazy anxiety
Like a sin
My love if I don’t see you

Look at the fado

Sometimes it’s so revengeful
Sometimes it’s so pacient
Tomorrow it’s an eater
Today abstainer
Liar gossiper
Sweet and true
One time conquerer
Another defeated
Tomorrow navigator
Today helpless
Sensual adventurer
Insane robber
We are captains
We are Albuquerques(2)
We are lions
The sea-wolves
With the eyes staring the skies
From the top of the afterpeaks

We are captains
We are Albuquerques
We are lions
The sea-wolves
And in fact what hurts you
Is that we don’t want to be heroes

Note: The journey's diary, Fernão Mendes Pinto.
“From the talking of the pirate Similau and by conviction of António de Faria we left in search of the island of Calempluy, also called the golden island, where the tombs of the kings of China were to be found, overflowing with silver and other richesses. This undertaking frightened us, but still we went with the name of Jesus in the mouth and in the heart. Like ministers of the night, the soldiers plundered this sacred place after dominating the hermit. As we arrived to the mines of Conxinacau we faced a weather of south called typhoon which was a fearful thing to see. And it was in this storm that António de Faria died at five of the month of August for which our lord shall be praised forever. The nine who escaped by mercy, tried to get to Cantão by land in order to get back to Malaca. But so abandoned as we were the people took us for thieves and vagabonds and we were taken prisoner and taken to Beijing by appeal, journey of which I will tell later on. In this adversity spreaded, despite it, a violent quarrel among us, born of a certain vanity that our portuguese nation has with it.”
(1) Fado: a portuguese type of music, normally sad and related with fate - the meaning of the word "fado".

Up this river

Up this river
Leaving behind
The deep hollow
Of the smoke house
I came near the dream
Floating on the waters
From the rivers of the skies
Ginger and honey flow
Silks porcelains
Pepper and cinnamon
Receiving offers
Of gentle songs
In our ears
Light as the air
The land sailing
My dear how I go
Up this river

Up this river
The boats go painted
Of many paintures
That describe balconies
And Agnes’ hairs
Draw memories
Along the water
Enchanted forests
Thickets Orange-trees
Plains of wheat
Shared love
Cherish the pains
When it is true
Sleeping monsters
In the fire sphere
How peace is born
Up this river

My dream
How much I want you
I don’t even know
I don’t even know
Stay a bit more
That I’ll too
That I’ll too
My dear

Up this river
This that belongs to some
Also belongs to others
It isn’t more nor less
Born were all
From the female’s sweat
From the male’s warmth
What is handled by some
Won't be handled
By others other things
Then the who sells the fresh
Doesn’t sell the salted
Nor also the dried
On land in harmony
Perfect and mild
From the borders of the river
Up this river

My dream...

Up this river
Leaving behind
The deep hollow
Of the smoke house
I came near the dream
Floating on the waters
From the rivers of the skies
Ginger and honey flow
Silks porcelains
Pepper and cinnamon
Receiving offers
Of gentle songs
In our ears
Light as the air
The land sailing
My dear how I go
Up this river

In the penitent’s procession

In the penitent’s procession
Go those guilty of gluttony
Go those guilty of sensuality
Punished until the medulla
Go the tepids and weak in love
Immaculate like the Creator
Go those guilty of abstinence
Go those guilty of their lacks
In the penitent’s procession
The men cut their one fleshes
They are gifts that they make to the heavens
To the highest of all heavens(1)
In the penitent’s procession
The priests of the austere life
Go happy and very decorated
Over the ashes of the sacrificed
And sing praises
To the God

Ease Lord
The pains of the dead
So that they praise you
With quiet sleep

In the procession
The penitents
Drink draughts of bitter drink
Of urine that they vomit afterwards
Trough the ill-fated night
In the procession
The penitents
Eat slices of curded blood
Of the bleeding of the other pilgrims
Softly mutilated
And sing praises
To the God

Note: The journey's diary, Fernão Mendes Pinto. “After the exile in Quansi, and because we helped them in this conquer they left us go free. I was in the island of Tamixumá that is the first land of Japan. From the Léquios’ island, and after many menaces and fears, I passed to Malaca and from there to Martavão where I was taken prisioner by Bramás and I arrived as a slave to the kingdom of Calaminhão. During the trip, in the temple of Tinagógó, it was time for a procession od over three léguas(2), so amazing and fearful, that it seemed a thing of enchantment.”
(1) In portuguese, the words “sky” and “heaven” are the same: “céu”
(2) “Légua” ancient portuguese measure, still in use. 1 légua = 5 Km

O romance de Diogo Soares

To sail to sail

To sail to sail
O green cane(1) of mine
To dive in your body
Between four walls
To give you a kiss and stay
To go to the bottom and return
O green cane of mine
To sail to sail

Who conquers always steals
Who covets never gives
Who opresses tyrannizes
Suffers shipwrecks thousand times
Pretty I don't know
I already go with chains in my feet
I already go with handcuffs in my hands
With collars on my neck
Lost and found
Selled in auction
I have been the merchandise
In Mocá's market
Almost praying Hail-Mary's
In the abysses of the sea

It's time to leave now
Farewell brunettes of Goa
It's time to return now
I long for you
My love
Of Lisbon
Before night comes
From the end of the world
To take lifes randomly
From the weak and the strong
From the top and the bottom
I bring a dancer's flair
That in spite of all dances
In my peregrine look
In the abysses os the sea

Note: The journey's diary, Fernão Mendes Pinto.
"In the twenty one years that my misfortunes lasted in which I, because of many work accidents that occured to me, crossed a large part of Asia, as it can be seen in this travel, I lived between plenty and misery, between winners and loosers, always relying on my return where all my sorrows would be consoled."

(1) "Cana verde"= "green cane". The cane of corn, before maturing. It is used meaning "young girl". It's of very common use in portuguese traditional/popular lyrics.

O que a vida me deu

Lembra-me um sonho lindo
