Rozendaal City

One day I wanted to introduce the city in my work. First I started to paint the city of Rotterdam. But I wanted more freedom. Freedom in choice of viewpoint and the kind of buildings in the picture. So I decided to build my own city. This way I could also create a greater distance between nature and city. There's no sign of life in this city, just empty buildings. The final images, rendered by the computer, were printed on a A4 colour printer and colour-copied to make them sunlight-resistent. Then I stuck the prints on the canvas and painted over or around them.

Charles Demuth visits Rozendaal City

Both in "City I" and "City II" the print is like an island within the painting. The one with the forest looks more like a wall you find in the street with posters stuck on top of each other, some parts torn away. The triptych featuring the figure 5 abandons the struggle between city and nature. The futurism of the computer city is far more important in this painting. Later this city found it's place in the real world, as shown in my Hoeksche Waard Project.
