Out of Iraq
Most civil organisations and projects have only recently started and are closely connected to specific political or religious interest groups. A lot of independent civic live remains to be invented. And the Iraqi's are dependent on support and assistance from outside, especially from Iraqi's living in exile.
But Iraq is not a desert. It is a country of clay tablets and hard disks, of powerful poetry and surprising web logs, a nation of activists, artists and mediators. These voices are isolated, unheard and closed in or shared on web sites that nobody reads. However they harbour the power of survival: the thing that does not kill you, makes you stronger.

The Tigris is much more than just a streaming river: it is a cradle of civilisation, a stream of water for fishing, swimming, drinking, irrigation and dumping, hiding and shaving . And it may be a vehicle for anybody's imagination. From the Gilgamesh Epic to Mehmet Uzun, from Rotterdam to Baghdad. From me to you.

Lebbeus Woods (1940) is an imaginary architect, or as he calls himself occasionally: an anarchitect, or even meta-architect. He interrogates architecture, subverts institutions and creates mind expansion rather than solid construction. His basic observation is: when in crisis, unexpected forces may take a city for a ride. If one can charm or mobilise these forces in advance, there is space for visionary and imaginative intervention.

"Ben je wel bang geweest?" العربية
Dit is de meest gestelde vraag als je heelhuids terug bent van het front. Het is het complement van de meest gegeven raad "Wees voorzichtig" tijdens je verblijf in Irak. Je was daar in een periode (de eerste weken van april) dat de spanning, de strijd en het gevaar met de dag toenamen. Eerst de strijd met Moqtada Al-Ssadr in oa.Ssadr City in het noorden van Baghdad, vervolgens de frontale Amerikaanse aanval op Fallujah en dan het antwoord: buitenlanders gijzelen om terugtrekking van buitenlandse troepen te eisen. In Irak zijn mensen in staat mensen zoals jij te gijzelen voor een politiek doel (en in een enkel geval te doden ook). En er zijn ook mensen in staat om je te gijzelen uit pure bezorgdheid.
