When Microsoft released their Internet Information Server 3.0 in early 1997 by far the biggest improvement was the inclusion of the so-called Active Server Pages. These Active Server pages allow you to program ‘between’ the HTML of the webpage in the popular language Visual Basic Script.

Scripting languages as included in IIS and Webbrowsers such as Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer offer only simple and "safe" functionality like flow control and mathematical functions. All in all this sounds very limited, but thanks to object technologies like ActiveX it’s still possible for programmers to extend the functionality of these scripting Languages.

Several of these components are shipped with ASP including ‘Database Access’ and ‘File read and write access’.
Since the standard functionality is limited there is plenty of room for third parties to ‘fill in the gaps’.

This site offers several server side components to fill these gaps:

  • ActiveMail, a powerful email component to send email from any ASP enabled website.
  • AspFilefunctions allows you to retrieve information for files or directories. Filelists can be retrieved and sorted by several criteria.
All components on this site come with a programmers manual, example files and on-line support.
