Today's Special: The judgment by the British Law Lords on Pinochet's immunity

This judgment may as well be regarded as the special of the decade. The judgment confirms that no immunity of jurisdiction applies to high public officials in cases of serious human rights violations. Naturally: international obligations have been undertaken by states to outlaw certain serious human rights violations as they originate from the public authorities themselves. Consequently, high ranking officials who may pre-eminently be responsible for the continuing occurrence of those state sponsored crimes can - as a matter of course - not enjoy immunity.
