Oh dear, it is getting even more complex! Now there is yet an other party claiming to have the tallest free-standing structure in the world! I am talking about the Amerada Hess Corporation and their 'BALDPATE COMPLIANT TOWER'. It is an oil and gas platform, built on a tower that stands in the Gulf of Mexico. They claim their tower measures 1900 ft. and is the 'TALLEST FREE-STANDING STRUCTURE IN THE WORLD'. How about that? But is an oil platform really free-standing? Isn't it supported by water?
Now there are even more candidates for the title. Sources indicate that Seoul Tower in Korea must be a serious competitor. The famous travel company Lonely Planet for example, stated that Seoul Tower is the 'third tallest tower in the world'. And there is the Information Center for Physics Research that claimed that 'Seoul Tower is the second highest in the world'
And on the website of mr. William Burns one can read that Seoul Tower is
'the highest in the world except the 479.7m high Moscow Tower'. Last year the people from Seoul Tower themselves even claimed on their website that Seoul Tower is
'the highest tower in the world'.
But how is that possible? Seoul Tower is of course a wonderful piece of engineering that gives the public an opportunity to get one of the most spectacular views in Asia. But Seoul Tower surely can't be the tallest structure in the world? According to many sources, including Judith Dupres' famous and wonderful book 'Skyscrapers' it is only 237 m tall. That is not even half of CN Tower! So what is the explanation? Hold on to your seat;

because they included the mountain that Seoul Tower is built on!!!
Shortly after this article was published on The High-Rise Pages, Seoul Tower removed the claim from their website. Nevertheless, if you ever have the opportunity to visit Seoul, you absolutely should visit the Seoul Tower, cause the view is supposed to be extremely beautiful!
