Background
The people behind SFS

Welcome to the Smart Filesystem website!  SFS is a new Amiga filesystem. Take a look at What's New on these pages.

SFS will be a new filesystem for your Amiga.  SFS was designed from scratch and during its development we've looked at a lot of other filesystems around to try and combine the best features of all of these filesystems into SFS.  Currently SFS is already very functional and it is already being tested by a few people.

You can find the most recent version of Smart Filesystem right here on the download page.  If you decide to download it, please remember that it is a BETA version!  This means it isn't fully tested yet and may destroy all data stored on your harddrive.   In other words, use at your own risk.  We cannot be held responsible for any damages resulting from the proper or improper use of this filesystem.  Having said that I can however say that Smart Filesystem has worked stable for the past few months on my own system.

BETA versions of Smart Filesystem will also be made available on Aminet (disk/misc/SFS_BETA.lha) but the most recent versions can always be found here.

If you have any problems with the BETA version, don't hesitate to email us.  If you have a bug to report, please take a look at the Bug Reports section.  Also check out the Troubleshooting section which may help you solve some common problems.

Are you a developer and you want to help us with writing tools for the filesystem?  Please contact us.  There are a number of things which really need to be done but lack the time ourselves.  Examples are conversion utilities to convert a FFS partition to a SFS partition (and maybe back as well) and recovery utilities.

What's New

The following is a list of recent additions to these pages. Whenever something has changed on these pages we'll put a notice here.  The most recent changes are listed first, and each item is linked to the page with the updated content.

28 March 1999

  • A new version is now available on the download page.   This version is incompatible with older versions of SFS, so please proceed with care.  Read the AmigaGuide file for hints on how to install two versions of SFS at the same time on your system.  If you have any problems, don't forget that there is a SFS mailinglist which provides a lot of valuable information.
  • Added SFSsalv by Jörg Strohmayer to the download page.  This is a tool which can be used to recover files from damaged SFS partitions.   Many thanks to Jörg for creating this great program!

7 November 1998

  • The 1.10 Aminet release had a rather annoying problem, so there is a new version available for download here.
  • There now is a mailinglist for SFS.

17 October 1998

  • Sorry for the long delay, but version 0.93 of SFS is now available!  Download it here.

4 August 1998

5 July 1998

  • Added a download page, so you can download the latest version of SFS directly from this website.
  • A Troubleshooting page was added which will detail some common problems you might experience when installing SFS.
  • Updated the features page a bit, and added an explanation of how SFS makes sure its disk is never invalidated.  See the Safe writing section.
