The artist:
D.J. Garrett was born in 1959 in Auckland, New Zealand. She started travelling at a very young age. Amongst places in India, England and Jamaica there was one place she continued returning to, namely Amsterdam. In this city, famous for its old masters and its rich art tradition, she received the best possible education at the prominent Amsterdam art academies specializing in etching, stone lithography and silk-screening.
Her work was noticed from the start and she was allocated one of the most desirable places in town, immediately next to the world famous Vincent van Gogh Museum and the Municipal Museum, to exibit and promote her work. This unique opportunity, granted by the Dutch council, caused her work to sell rapidly to customers from all over the world.
She has acquired the Dutch nationality and as so many artists before her she has proven that not being native to Holland has endowed her with an extraordinary fresh and sharp eye for the beauty of Amsterdam.

The artist about the technique:
An etching plate lies at the basis of each print. I generally use copper plates and work into the plate with various etching techniques. To make an etching plate can take from a minimum of two weeks up to several months. For this particular collection the technique used is line drawing after which the plate was etched in acid.
Once the etching plate is ready an edition, limited only, can be made of it. Each print requires that the plate is hand inked and hand shaded before it is ready to be rolled through the etching press. Therefore each print is a valuable original.
