BERNARD FAUCON (France)

Bernard Faucon (b. 1950) has produced some of the most original photographs of the late 20th century. He has been at the forefront of the staged, surrealist school of photography since its inception in the 1970s and is now considered one of its leading proponents. The work, however, has a much broader range, from the classical to the surreal, as can be seen from a study of his numerous books. We are offering here the full range, including many unpublished images.

Over the past 25 years, Bernard Faucon has had nearly 250 solo exhibitions and group shows, from Leo Castelli in New York City to Yvon Lambert in Paris, and as well innumerable one man and group shows in museums worldwide. He is also represented in numerous public and private collections, and there is an extensive critical literature about him, most notably by Roland Barthes. See also the biographical notes.

Paris Retrospective Exhibition Great Success

From 6 December 2005 through 4 March 2006, the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris hosted the Retrospective Exhibition "Bernard Faucon: 1975-1995". The exhibition occupied the entire building and consisted of 240 prints from all of his periods. A catalogue raisonné has been published and includes important critical texts and every image in the show. Since the exhibition, many of his images have now sold out their editions.

The FRESSON PROCESS was developed hy the French firm of the same name, and uses coal to produce paper prints with a unique luminosity and grain. Fresson printing produces an image that is characteristically diffused and subtle, reminiscent of the "pointillism" of Impressionist painting. Fresson printing is extremely stable and is considered the most archival of any color procedure in use today.
