Travelnotes: Guatemala 2000 + 2001 + 2002 + 2003
GUATEMALA:2000
Antigua, Arch. Antigua,Capuchinas Antigua, Market
November 2000 I went by UnitedAirlines via Washington and Los Angeles to Guatemala
City.An individual trip of Activity International programmed:4 weeks of Spanish lessons;4
weeks of volunteering and about 4 weeks to travel.Stand during this time: Antigua, a nice
little town, built in Colonial and Spanish style.Living with a hostfamily to learn faster the
language and culture.Every day 4 hours private-lessons Spanish at APPE (Academia de
ProfesoresPrivados de Español),at noon several activities like excursions, movies, salsa,
lessons in gestures, conversation and extra grammar etc.
Host-family in Antigua 2001 2002
Busy days especially to learn quick a lot of Spanish. There were a reasonable amount of
Dutch people,Canadians,Scandinavians and a little amount of Americans at the school.
Most people liked to spend the free-time together so nobody was feeling lonely. Every
weekend there was a possibility to join some people on a roundtrip.
Spanish at APPE Antigua, Parc Church San Francisco
Antigua has a lot of nice places. Many buildings have a patio with in the middle a fountain.
The central park is the place to be,to meet other persons. In the park also there are a lot
of Guatemalian people, who want to sell you all kinds of things like: belts, cloths, masks,
jewelry, bags and other stuff. Goiing out in Antigua is possible in bars, the whole town is
nice and cozy.
The creditmatic pays out onVisa and Mastercard.About 30 Internetplaces are giving you
the opportunity to keep in contact with home. With the chickenbus you can easy and very
cheap travel from Antigua to f.e.: Guatemalacity, Panajachel(LakeAtitlan),Chichicastenan
go,Zacapa,RioDulce and a lot of interesting villages in the neighbourhood(San Juan,San
Andres,Santa Lucia,San Antonio)For travelling to places farther on(PuertoBarrios,Flores,
Tikal,Coban, Monterrico,Livingston) you better take a special bus for about 30 -50 Quetz.,
because the special bus has more space and comfort. Also travelling from Antigua to
Honduras, Salvador, Mexico and Belize is easy to be done.
Lake Atitlan Chichicastenango, Church Chichi,Market
Lake Atitlan is splendid to see and inspires you to philosophize. Many hippies are walking
still around at Panajachel. A trip along the villages at the lake is nice and relaxing to do.
Around the lake 7 volcanoes and every hour of the day the view on the lake is different.
Chichicastenango is famous for its market on thursdays and sundays. The prices are then
fixed on dollars and bargaining is less possible. That is why we went with 5 students on a
saturday. On the market you can buy anything, but mostly the texture is beiing bought.Like
everywhere in the mountains people wear their traditional clothing. The colourcombination
tells us from which village they are coming.
At saturday we succeeded in buying very cheap some nice articles. The Indian church was
filled with people in traditional, colourful clothes. In the morning they offered fresh chicken-
blood to the Gods. On the stairs of the church were a lot of flowers,a kind of flowermarket.
At sunday the market was no fun, because it was expensive and it was too crowded,so you
could hardly walk and see.
Another nice trip was by special bus to Puerto Barrios and farther by a collective boat to
Livingston. It is about 5 hours driving from Guatemala City, but on the way they take a break,
so you can stretch your legs and eat and drink.
Livingston Livingston Livingston
On the road you will see changing the landscape from mountains to savannah to tropical
rain-forrest. And also the vegatation is changing a lot. Livingston has another atmosphere
as other places in Guatemala. Garifunas are living here, a kind of black people. To get in
contact with the Garifunas it is necessary to take a local guide.Via narrow roads you enter
their village and can admire their different huts and cottages, with a lot of green around.
The people don't like to be put on photo. For 1 Q. you can buy a " pan de coco", freshed
backed, still warm. Upon a mountain was the cabin of our guide, with an overview of Be-
lize, Livingston and Honduras. His trip went on to a little river where we got into a canoe.
After sailing quite a bit we arrived in the middle of the jungle. There we left the canoe and
walked for hours in the jungle to a dry waterfall. Along the palmbeach we walked back to
Livingston. All together we went for more then 6 hours, we were exhausted but also very
satisfied. In the evening we completed this day with a typical Garifunadinner: backed fish,
with a kind of pancakes of rice, milk of coco, green banana and mixed salad.Very tasty!
During the dinner we had a live-concert of Garifunamusic. This was a very nice day!
Rio Dulce House Rio Dulce Well Rio Dulce Bridge
The next day we went by boat along the Rio Dulce.A beautiful river surrounded by jungle
and steep rockfaces. It is crowded with many birds. Cormorants and white herons have
their own island. There is one spot where the water comes hot from the rocks and all the
way there were many mangroves. The boattrip was very relaxing and nice. In the village
Rio Dulce we took the special bus back to Guatemala-city.
People who want to stay for a longer time as three months in Guatemala have to leave
the country for about 72 hours in order to get a new visa. Often they went for a t rip to
Honduras to visit the Mayan Ruiines at Copan, to combine business with pleasure. By
shuttle we went with 3 people to Copan. A drive of six hours over rough mountainroads.
The mountains in Honduras look different, they are round at the top. Beside the Maya-
ruiines ,Copan has two musea. I liked a lot the artisticy of the Estellas,Sculptures and
Ornaments. Both musea give a goodoverview of the Mayan-culture at this place and are
really worth visiting.

After a culture-trip we travel with 5 persons on a nature-trip.This time we go for a week-
end by chickenbus in the direction of Monterrico,a little village at the Pacific-coast.
From Antigua to Monterricoyou have to take 4 chicken-busses and a boat to get there.
The chickenbus drives a whole piece off-road and that is like an adventure. At Escuintla
we had to take another bus and we succeeded in transferring without loosing a minute.
When we do need another transfer we have an offer to travel on by pick-up. For 5 Q.a
person we take this offer to drive to the boat. And it was a lovely unexpected ride.
By boat we go through the mangrove-woods to Monterico.Again a pick-up offers us to
take us to Hawaii, a turtle-project we like to visit. We have supper at the neighbours for
10 Q. and walk at night for some hours along the black beach, to watch the turtles and
the turtle-eggs. It is a pity that we don't see any turtle or egg. But we may release baby-
turtles of one day old.And that is a nice feelingSunset and sundown is a fantastic sight
at this Pacific, black beach. On the black beach you can hardly walk during daytime, the
sand becomes too hot. In the shadow you meet a lot of mosquito's and during day -
and night-time they will terrorize you. The way back was no uproar.
Monterrico - Beach Monterrico - Hawaii Monterrico-sundown
With a special bus we visit Coban. On our list places to see: Champey,Languin, the river
Cahabon and a biotope. With a guide we drive by jeep into the mountains.Narrow, steep
little mountainroads with a lot of knobs and bubbles, the panorama is magnificent. The
mountains contain a tropical forest and it is very misty and so nice you could look at this
and enjoy it for hours. You think you are in another world .The caves of Languin and also
the waterfalls of Champey are likea fairytale. The water of the river has a beautiful colour.
This is an impressive and very nice landscape!
Coban - Champey Coban - Mountains San Andres - Church
One of the school-excursions went to San Andres. In a kind of Indian Church you could
offer money and alcohol, coloured candlles were lighted for love, hapiness, health or the
opposite. With a twig you could blow the angry ghosts.Another village in the neighbour-
hood of Antigua is San Juan de Obispo. At this village I also took 2 weeks of Spanish
lessons at Appe.Doiing your lessons with a view of the valley with Antigua and surroun-
ded by three volcanoes is extremely nice. One of the volcanos,The Fuego is active and
from the school you have a good view . In the month of December there are a lot of
processions and festivals in San Juan.On New-yearseve there is a very big procession
and whole the village is active by making a beautiful carpet of flowers, pineneedles and
coloured sand. The procession goes over the carpet and ends high in the village. With a
gigantic firework the procession ends.At last El Toro, a man with firework on his head is
running after the people, and they try to escape from this danger by running.
San Juan San Juan San Juan
Chantal and I went for a week to Salvador by special bus. We wanted especially to go to
enjoy the beach and the Pacific. The capitol of Salvador made a positive impression.By
chickenbus we drove in the direction of SantaTecla to transfer after a half hour to another
chickenbus to Libertad ( a small seaside place with few hotels ). We found a cozy hotel
about two minutes walking from the beach. Other guests were mostly surfers. The beach
in Libertad was grey and very quiet and the waves of the Pacific were very high. After two
days of cooking in the sun it was time to leave. We decided to go to Sonsonate to make
some trips around Salvador.During a walk to a volcano we were caught by an earthquake.
We did not know how to react properly, should we go up or down the mountain? We could
hardly keep standing on our feet on the rolling earth, while big stones and landslides fell
around us. We were in shock. On the way to our hotel we saw many destroyed houses
and mournful people. Just a little bit later we realized that we had had a chance to die in
an earthquake and that we had a lot of luck by surviving it.The whole country was one ruin
and we were in shock,so we went fast back to Antigua.
Libertad - Beach Libertad - Pacific Izapco - Mountain
The last trip I did on my own to Tikal and Peten by plane.Tikal is also a highlight because
of the combination of Maya-ruiins and Jungle. Especially for fowlers an excellent spot.
With guide and a group we walked from one temple to another via paths winding through
the jungle. A lot of walking, admiring and hearing in the moisty heat of the jungle. You are
amazed of the giant buildings of the Maya-culture.However the artistic qualities of altares
and estellas are here less present than those in Copan. The accent here lies more on the
pyramids. The next day I went again to enjoy everything in my own time and way. After
that I travelled to Flores, a tiny little village on an island in the Lake of Peten. The visit to
Flores took about 15 minutes and than I had seen all and had enough of it. Spontaneous
I decided to take the bus to Belize the next day .An unexpected experience!!On the way
toBelize I have seen many pieces of burned down jungle, miserable huts and many poor
dressed children. At this road the busses are attacked regulary and now I understand why!
Tikal - Grandplaza Tikal - Ceiba Tikal - Pyramid Peten - Lake
In Belize you really get that Carabean Feeling over you. The people are very friendly and
relaxed. Striking is also the presence of many various butterflies. When I wanted to eat at
1.30 pm in a restaurant, the cook had already left so it was impossible to order dinner. The
other restaurants were closed. Very relaxed!!!The village I visited at Belize was San Igna
cio, nice but not very special. To return to Guatemala I had to pay 20 B-Dollar and also 20
Q.The personnel at the bus from the border to Flores was stoned and very annoying and
and the relief was shooting with his pistol out of the bus a couple of times. Adventure???
Guatemala is a very varied country qua people, climates, nature and culture. It is a fantastic
country to live, work, study and travel.I can recommand it to everybody !
GUATEMALA 2001
Because I did like my first Guatemala-trip very much, I decided to return in the summer
of 2001. Most of my time I was studying spanish in Antigua and living between the local
people.I became a regular churchvisitor, had some incredible miraculous religious expe-
riences and became also an admiror of several people of the Fraternidad International
de Hombres de Negocios del Evangelio Completo. (FIHNEC) I was invited to their
special breakfastmeetings at the Pollo Campero in Antigua and experienced the spirit
of this organization. More information about FIHNEC at the chapter religion on another
page. I spended a lot of time with the students of the spanish school Appe and made a
lot of new friends. My purpose to live more the daily Guatemalan life succeeded . I was
invited to a first communion, a wedding, some birthdays and a diploma-party. With my
beloved professor I travelled a little around to Guatemalacity, the Lake of Atitlan and the
Mayan ruiins of Iximché.

In Guatemala City we visited the Palace, the Cathedral and the map of Guatemala in
relief. Walking around in the city was fun. We enjoyed the pastry and had a good dinner
together.A nice way to get an impression of citylife in a metropol. There is an incredible
amount of traffic. And every minute busses are passing by. In the shopping streets quite
a lot of walking people.A lot of the merchandise is presented on the streets and it is not
easy to walk fast. They say that Guatemalacity is cheaper to buy things then Antigua, but
that is not always true.
Guatemalacity Palace Relief map 14-08- 2001
A second trip was to the coffee-museum Jocotenango, a modern organized museum
of history of costums and music of Guatemala.Everything was installed realistic and
gave an impression of special occacions like a marriage or harvesterhome. An audio-
visual view gave the development of music in Guatemala, especially the marimba got
lot of attention. At last an educational tour to learn everything to know about coffee and
it was an excellent presentation and explanation, really well done. The other trips to lake
Atitlan and Iximché were more like enjoying silent nature and family meeting at a farm
in Tecpan. The lake stays a kick to see and to experience. This time we went by boat to
San Antonio and San Lucas.Beautiful panoramas and a very nice friend does a person
a lot of good.
Lake of Atitlan San Lucas Iximché Iximché
Iximché too is a nice place to go for Mayafreaks. Situated on a mountainslope hidden
in the vegetation you can find the ruiines close together, most like grassmountains.Quit
different from Tikal. The spot is well hidden. It is silent and very peaceful and feels like
heaven. After this fine trip we walked down the mountain toTepcan for a family-meeting.
The family lived in a little house on the ground of a very big farm. First getting used to
the fact of one room with table and chairs, a barn.View on the meadows with cows. The
cows have an extremely nice shelter with nice flowers.Other animals at the farm were
horses, pigs, goats, rabbits ,chickens. The farm had also a slaughter-house.I am sorry
to have witnessed the slaughter of a big pig. Not electric, just beaten by a big wooden
hammer and after that cutting his throat.
Tecpan Ruiins of Iximché Family-visit
When I think back, I still hear the pig scream! In a gigantic barn there were thousands
of chickens, has the bio-industry also arrived in Guatemala?? But the family was very
nice and hospitable and we had a delicious meal. It was a fine journey anyway.
Because it was possible to take a weekendtrip at school,we went with 7 students by
minibus to Monterrico. Our place to stay was Hotel Mangles at the beach.Next to our
hotel was a reservation of iguanas, alligators and turtles. And we had a swimmingpool!
Well situated, quiet, but to consume food and drinks you had to walk 15 min.on the hot
black sand. It gave some trouble, when we wanted to have dinner in a local restaurant
with 9 persons together, because there was only one cook. But in no time the openair
kitchen was filled with helping hands and after 11/4 hour everything was on the table.
Inbetween I had consumed about 11/2 liter of Gallo.Finding the wc was like playing
maze. Finally 2 cabins with a curtain and only a wc-pot with the aged dirt and a bucket
with water.
Hotel in Monterrico Beach Lagune with mangroves Reservation
Because I am crazy about fish and shrimps I ordered them both. And it tasted delicious!
I had 2 days of diarrhoea, but that was no problem, I can handle that. Our intention was:
Just a relax- weekend at the beach, doiing nothing, swimming, getting some sun and do
homework for the spanish classes. Also the possibility to do turtlewatch at night. The re-
servation next to the hotel was a little primitive and it was clear that there was no money
to do better. They even asked to take 2 alligators with us, because they had no money
left to feed them.An exciting trip we did by boat through the lagune with mangroves.
We had to play early birds to see a the birds. The boat was moved on musclepower of
a woman. The mangroveforest is a reservation.A lot of wood has been disapeared for
cooking and housebuilding and now the mangroves are in a protected area. The man-
groves have an important task to filter the salted water into sweet,so it is for the water
and birds sake that they have to stay alive. A nice trip over the water with the view of
many birds and flowers. A canal was as wide as our boat and it was fun passing this
small canal. The backway was also a happening. The road along the coast goes through
little villages,so you see a lot. At the end of the road you go with the bus on a boat to
the other side of the lagune. A successful trip!
