The Main Page

If you're new to this website, please visit the Site Map. A lot will be explained and clarified there. In short it boils down to this: I'm building a website about all aircraft in military service during World War 2. Not only the well-known ones, but also the reasonably unknown ones. As long as their developmental status reached the flying stage. I distinguish about 100 well-known aircraft, and about 500 less known aircraft, so the total amount of aircraft will be 600.

In order to browse through so many aircraft I supplied indexes sorted on all kinds of things, simplifying your search. Furthermore I created a messageboard where you can ask questions, or spout your knowledge, for I might be wrong about details. Pay it a visit when you're up to it. Besides the messageboard there is always a way to reach me by mail, so feel free to drop one. For questions about the aircraft I kindly ask you to use the messageboard, where other people can answer your question(s) as well.

Have Fun!!

A new milstone reached! At around 12:00 hours UTC the website received the 100.000th visitor. Although the website has been dormant in the development area, it still is on my wishlist to progress it further. The fact that 100.00 people have visited it already, even though the amount of updates is pretty low, means that there is plenty of interest for it. This for sure is heartwarming :-)

Catastrophy has struck...

My website has been off-line for so long. How come, you might ask? Well, my (free) provider discovered a security problem in their webserver. In order to be sure no-one could exploit it, they shut the whole thing down. And since the webserver is no commercial product they have shifted their priorities to other business, so the website(s) stayed down. In the beginning I had hopes it would be solved soon nevertheless, but since the address of this website has changed, you might guess what happened.
I have received mails from numbers of people, asking me whether my website would be down for good. Well, here is your answer. I decided to host it on my own provider, even though the traffic is limited on a monthly basis. It might turn out that at the end of the month the website is unreacheable again. If so, don't despair, a new traffic quotum will start at the beginning of the next month. In the meantime I will look out for another cheap provider without the pests of Ads, and without any traffic limits.

Also, you might have noticed that I changed my layout something. I still don't like it fully, but it is fast and simple. In the future this page will change more, gradually.

For now, I thank all of you who supported me in these dark months :-)

Many people have despaired, including me, whether there would be another update ever. Well, you have to despair no longer. I finally managed to brew the final batch of the initial 100. Yeah, I know, I'll promise you no new dates ever, it looks like you and I just have to see when I'm finally up to publish my new batch.
In the meantime, here are the last of the 100 to chew on while I will be looking at improving the website, looks and underpinning technicallities alike. Also, I might decide to host my website elsewhere in the future, since the current host has been unpleasantly independable. Some time ago I noticed that an old version of the website was put in place, and before that the website just kept flipping between the old version and the last version. Already you can use the address http://www.ww2warbirds.net, at the moment it is only used as a portal to the current host.

It is somehow funny that concerning the aircraft I completed the circle. A long time ago I started with the Aichi D3A 'Val', and I'm finishing with the Yokosuka D4Y Suisei 'Judy'. Both are Japanese naval dive bombers, the last one being the successor of the first one. I could think of no better coincidence as this one. The complete new list of aircraft is as follows: Reggiane Re.2000 Falco, Republic P-47 Thunderbolt, Savoia-Marchetti S.M.79 Sparviero, Short Stirling, Short Sunderland, Supermarine Spitfire (at last :-)), Tupolev SB-2, Tupolev Tu-2, Vickers Wellington, Vought F4U Corsair, Yakovlev Yak-1 and as mentioned above the Yokosuka D4Y Suisei 'Judy'. 12 new planes, now totalling the list at the grand total of108
Yeah, I know, I can't count really :-), but some aircraft really deserved to be in the first 100 :-):-):-).

My plans for the future with this website are:

  • Redesigning the looks of this page
  • Simplifying the path to the index pages
  • Creating more kinds of index pages
  • Filling in the gaps between the aircraft as presented now
  • Redoing all old pages according to my new standards
The fact that I will be working on new aircraft will motivate me to continue parallel to the restructuring phase which will be rather dull and time consuming. Next release will show some great changes though.

30 September 2001

Well, you probably noticed: pretty much time has ticked by since the last update. I just hope to make the first hundred in time before the end of the year :-(. The good news, however, is that I updated two aircraft (the Macchi MC.200 and MC.202) after a tip from Claudio Berni from Italy, Thanks Claudio. Furthermore I included the following new aircraft on my website: Morane-Saulnier MS.406, Nakajima B5N, Nakajima Ki-43 Hayabusa, Nakajima Ki-44 Shoki, Nakajima Ki-84 Hayate, North American B-25 Mitchell, Northrop P-61 Black Widow, Petlyakov Pe-2 Peshka, Petlyakov Pe-3, Polikarpov I-15 Chaika, Polikarpov I-16 Rata (Mosca), Potez 63, and P.Z.L. P.11 Jedenastka. Quite the list at 13 new planes.
Enjoy these aircraft, and I'll finish the last batch of the initial 100, being 11 more...

Set your screen resolution to 1024 × 768 at least, otherwise the presented tables might be hard to read.
Also, the fact that there are hundreds of these pages made me decide to use Cascading Style Sheets. This form of layout-formatting is not well supported in older browsers, so please update your Browser to at least 5.5 (Internet Explorer), or 6.1 (Netscape)
