Jetons
"Money makes the world go round." It goes everywhere, and the transgender world is no exception. An important task at the T&T-evenings is therefore "manning" the cash register. And it is not easy to find volunteers who are willing to do it. Julia has been doing this for years already. Most of the time she did it on the evenings when I was working at the bar. However we do not have to work at the bar any longer (volunteers from the community center have taken over this task). So I did not have any duties at the T&T-evening any more. This month Julia was not able to come, so I took her place at the cash register, but I have immediately told Mieke she can schedule me for this work on a regular basis from now on. I like to make a contribution to the club in one way or another.
Fortunately this was not a very heavy evening to begin with. There were relatively few guests(just over sixty). This was probably due to carnival (mardi gras). Carnival is a very nice opportunity for trans people who are still living "in the closet" to go out in female attire. Everything goes during carnival!
But we also had some guests in the house that were dressed up! I noticed some witches and a pirate... Cool! People from Brabant apparently like Carnival so much, they even want to combine it with going to the T&T-evening.
So I was "on duty" tonight. The duties of the person at the cash register are to welcome the guests and to collect the entrance fees. We also sell coins for buying drink at the bar. I learned tonight that our Belgian friends call these coins "jetons"...
And there was more financial business to discuss. I recently heard that the funding for the work group Transsexuality at Humanitas in Rotterdam is likely ending before long! That is sad news; I personally have had a lot of support from them, free of charge! They not only work for the city of Rotterdam, but really for all of the southern Netherlands.
I spoke about this with Evelienne from Maastricht this evening. She is the treasurer of the LKGTenT and she told me they are trying to get financial support through Transgender Netwerk Nederland, in which Humanitas is involved too. There may be some hope there, but the Transgender Network is not intended for help for individuals. It is more focused on acceptance of trangendered people in our society.
