Een definitie geven van filatelie is erg riskant. Een definitie - hoe persoonlijk dan ook - is misschien toch wel handig in de context van de bijdragen op deze website. Filatelie is het bestuderen en met materiaal documenteren van postwaarden vanuit één of méér van de drie hiernavolgende gezichtspunten de postaal-functionele de aanmaak/productie-technische de thematische / propagandistische Gemakshalve noem ik postwaarden in het vervolg postzegels of zegels, er aan voorbijgaand dat postwaardestukken, frankeermachinestempels en dergelijke er volledig bijhoren. Wie mijn artikelen kent zal wel weten dat mijn belangstelling voornamelijk uitgaat naar de aanmaakproductie-technische kant.

It's always risky to give a concrete definition of what philately is. In the context of this website I wouldn't mind give my very personal one. Philately is the study and documentation of the postal issues from one of the three following points of view postal / functional technical / stamp production thematical / propagandistisc Postal issues may include postage stamps in the first place but certainly don't exclude postal stationery or meter stamps. Who is familiar with my articles should know that my prime interest lies in the technical aspects of stamp production.
