Correction [4/4/07]. Below I state that Lee Broughton lied on America's Most Wanted when she said she went directly back to the hotel, to bed. This is not correct - the statement was made by an announcer in a voice-over, not by Lee herself. The error is entirely mine in misreading the show transcript for which I apologise - there is already far too much poor research, error, spin, misinformation, disinformation, and outright lies surrounding this case and I have no wish to add to the confusion.

Thanks to poster Splat on Scrux for pointing out my error.

In the process of checking this however I have located other material which supports the general thrust of my argument that Lee's response to the situation was clearly excessive and indicative that she witnessed or is somehow aware of a significant event after Joran parted with Natalee. This is now included below.

The release of Lee Broughton's FBI 302 statement (Broughton FBI302, 050603), through apparently truncated and therefore “sanitised” in some way, nevertheless does tell us some interesting things.

Heli just posted the 302 from Broughton, I don't think the second part has ever been online, I will post it just in case (I am sure they will be in the 302 section soon), but maybe some might find it interesting to dicuss about, I make it a new thread, since the second part of her statement is 'new information' (sort of).

I have made it clear that I don't like statements (page 3), but what I'm attempting here is to match some statements to known fixed points of evidence. Yes, my old favorites the cellphone records, and the Holiday Inn keycard swipes.

I think I've already made my case for why the timeline of J2K movements (page 7) can be taken at more-or-less at face value. By this I mean that the deductions may not be exactly right, they may or may not have gone to the lighthouse for example, but that they aren't significantly wrong, and we can dismiss theories that require them to have, say, gone to the other end or side of Aruba.

Deepak just drove

Beth and HMI have been trying to roll back the departure time from C&C's to 1.00am; Beth has even said “12:30”am. This starts to come into conflict with statements and some photographic evidence that Joran at least was in the club around 12:33am, and Ruth's statement that she left early, before closing time.

At the other end of the time window Deepak has to be logging on at 2:00am from his home in Hooiberg (page 7) near the middle of the island, not an insignificant travelling time from Palm Beach (where Joran has to appear cell calling at 2:40am).

As blog poster all10suspects put it, there just isn't enough time for Deepak to have been anything but the driver on a mini-tour. Unlike all10 this makes sense to me for two reasons. As a teenager my friends and I enjoyed crusing around on hot nights just to enjoy the freedom of newly-found mobility of finally having a car and licence. At various times I have also lived in tourist destinations and it is totally normal to show visitors around, even a stranger, with pride in where you live.

Joran walked home

I concentrated on the cell records and I showed (page 7) that this material evidence is most consistant with Joran walking home from the Fishermen's Huts. So ...

They were at the Fisherman's Huts

My response to folk like Wabbi is that Joran's first cell call (logged by the system itself) is sufficient to place Joran at the Huts (see page 14). And ...

Joran wasn't picked-up

He did call Deepak, now at home, but was rebuffed and not picked up by anybody - Joran's middle or second cell call, 3.00am, while in transit demonstrates that. From his first call at 2:40am, calls at 3.00am and 3.15am, and following internet activity to about 4am when he logs off the net, Joran's whereabouts and activities can be determined.

Wabbi, all10suspects, Doc, et al take careful note: the records are kept by the ISP; the local computer clock datestamp is utterly meaningless. LE are not that bloody stupid - even in Aruba!

Here I want to look at some other bits that still don't fit.

With the little we have learned about that early morning, the more it has become apparent by an absence that there is an information hole around the MB'ers around the critical time. What the roommates aren't saying is being defined by the bits that have been said.

While statements are poor evidence, at the moment there seems no reason to doubt that the various published FBI 302 statements are in fact genuine; if incomplete.

The swipes

I have concluded from previous statements that Natalee wasn't carrying the actual keycard issued in her name that night. This was mainly based on the media statements and interviews of her roommates.

But she had to put the $50 and change somewhere, so it is reasonable to assume that her skirt had a pocket and that she also had (one of the other girls') key card on her. This wafer of hi-tech plastic could be the only physical marker for her last resting place.

Lee Broughton's 302 now casts some doubts on those deductions and conclusions and they need to be re-examined in the light of this new evidence.

Natalee is seen on video at 2:38am and 3:10am.
Natalee uses key again at 3:22am and 3:26am.

But the 1:26am amd 2:38am does not match what Joran has said.
So is it Natalee all of those times?
If so the question then becomes what happen to Natalee at after 3:26am?

...and if Joran and Deepak are home and chatting on the net...?

A mistaken construction I think, but still an interesting question. Just how do all these silicon records fit with various scenarios?

I'd say 6 minutes to the lighthouse and 2 minutes from the lighthouse to the Fisherman's Huts.

I drive from CnC to Joran's house in 6 minutes. I do that daily.

I drive from Joran's house to the Marriott in 4 minutes. I also do that daily.

I drive from CnC to the Marriott in 9 minutes. I do it several times a day.

I am 100% absolutely sure about the times. My daughter goes to school close to Joran's house and I work close to CnC.

On Monday, May 30, 2005, around 00.00, I saw a group of these American students swimming naked in the sea off the Holiday Inn Hotel. I didn't see from direction they came or what they wore to the sea. I saw that this group students at around 02.30, left the sea and I saw that a couple of these students walked to the “Jacuzzi”. I also was a couple others walk to the “Curacao Tower” and that the others to the “Bonaire Tower” walked. I cannot say how many persons were swimming naked because I didn't count them.

On the same day around 02.30, I saw that “M” walking with the slim white man from the northern direction to the direction of the “Marriott Hotel” met and with the slim white man stood under a hut. I must note that at this same moment a group of the American students came naked out of the water on the sand and were putting their clothes on.

J2K arrived at CnC's 12:33 am, there is a picture with a date and time stamp taken by a tourist (alledged).

On TV Ruth McVeigh says she “leaves early”, returns to the hotel and goes to bed. There is considerable dispute if Ruth left before or after Joran arrived, and did or didn't see him, but if she is telling the truth (and in this case that's no small “if”) then she would have been back at the room around 1am.

Madison Whatley has claimed she was sleeping with her boyfriend in a different room (unspecified) that night. There is still no reason to think this isn't true

Timing Accuracy - A small word on the accuracy of times. The cellphone times should be within the second; ISP times within the minute. Manually-set systems such as security video timestamps may be in error up to +/-5 minutes; personal camera backplate timestamps will have a similar error but of lower certainty, if set at all.

This would be a good match to Lee's return, presuming that Ruth is telling the truth about leaving and returning early and going to bed, and that she was asleep when Lee came in.

If Deepak had driven directly back to the HI this would be about the time Natelee could be entering the room. But no statement or evidence seems to support this construction. This would also require a direct return, no stops at Joran's home, side trip to the lighthouse, or dalliance by the Huts.

So we may still presume that “Natalee's” keycard was in the hands one one of her roommates, and from her FBI 302 statement I'm now inclined to think it was being used by Lee Broughton.

Presuming this video actually exists; it would be hugely significant if Natalee was actually recorded at the HI any time after she parted with Joran at 2:40am, as the cell records strongly suggest they did.

Moreover she is supposed to be seen leaving the washroom in the company of a tripmate. This would also have very significant implications.

At the very least there seems to be a video of two of the MB girls and it would be very handy to know who exactly, who could have been mistaken for Natalee at that time?. Unlike the casino video showing Natalee there do not seem to have been any stills or actuality of this video on the net, so it remains a moot point.

Swipe 0322 and 0336

Either or both of these swipes can now be taken as Lee returning to the room “around 3 or 4” as per her FBI302.

At this point we have no indication what Lee (or Ruth) were doing during this time, where they were, or why she/they apparently went out and re-entered 14 minutes later.

These keycard swipes span the time we can be certain Natalee is going missing, roughly 1:30 to 3:30am.

When we look at the photo of the general area (above) it becomes apparent that the Fisherman's Huts are practically line-of-sight to anybody on the ocean side of the HI pools.

We can also see that the shortest route from the pool to the Curacao Tower would be via the beach, and that anyone walking back to the Curacao Tower would be facing in the direction of the Huts and they would be in view for most of that walk.

One of the roomies, let's assume Lee, is out somewhere.

The most obvious place for her to be “out” is partying on with the other MB'ers at the HI pool or on the beach nearby. In itself this party hasn't been hidden, but the possible attendence of one of Natalee's roomies has been.

So why only that specifically?

The story maintained for many months was that all three were (variously) in bed somewhere when the critical events took place.

The release of Lee Broughton's FBI302 statement made only a day or so after gives lie to many aspects of the Family/HMI story.

I've maintained since the swipe times became known that one of the MB'ers has been lying about what they were doing at the critical time.

Madison simply 'fessed up to sleeping with her boyfriend. So we must presume that it was more unmentionable than that.

In TV interview Lee claimed to have “flashbacks” triggered by “party” scenes.

Given the proximity of the pool party to the beach, and Lee (or Ruth) was out and about at this time; I surmise that linked to the party atmosphere she “witnessed” (in some way) what actually happened to Natalee.

Someone swiped the door at 3:22am, meaning that in the minutes prior they were in transit from somewhere. If Lee was poolside this puts her on the beach, facing the Huts a couple of hundred metres away across the water, line of sight and line of hearing, at around 3:20am.

I also note unconfirmed reports that a HI houskeeper heard a girl screaming in the early hours of that morning.

Remembering that she may have been very drunk or even drugged, and that “flashbacks” can result from highly stressful events, did Lee actually see or hear something she couldn't do anything about, or that didn't makes sense until she sobered up next morning?

Is Lee overwrought, a drama queen particularly given to panic attacks and flashbacks? By itself, this reaction seems a bit extreme and premature the following morning. Mounting anxiety that Natalee might miss her flight home is understandable, but a panic attack, crying, and particularly nauseous suggest something much more serious.

Taken at face value, Lee has last seen Natalee at C&C's; some (unknown) tripmates have witnessed Natalee leave C&C's with J2K “Woo Woo Aruba!”; while others still expect her to follow on to the airport in a taxi. Around 10am Lee says she was interviewed by “Hotel Police” (possibly the beach patrol, the first recorded report to police is 2pm from the HI manager).

In short, did Lee “witness” Natalee drown?

I once witnessed a guy take a bad fall into an empty swimming pool when we were all very drunk. Your very best recall is pretty poor.

Therefore I'm inclined to think that she saw or heard something that didn't click until next morning such as seeing some blond girl swimming in the moonlight, or possibly as Natalee calling out, only to realise later it was for help.

Lack of information is information

The story of how the British used radio to spy on the Germans during the Second World War is now well documented in the history of Bletchly Park and the cracking of Enigma. (ref: The Hut 6 Story, et al)

An important part of such monitoring is noting changes in radio traffic, and a sudden silence can be as significant as a sudden burst of traffic.

So we can get an idea of what HMI is trying to hide by filling in information around it and highlighting it like the still missing peices of a part-done jigsaw puzzle.

In this case the informational black hole appearing here is around a few of the MB'ers, Lee's lack of any detail about the critical time period in particular.

These keycard swipes define three points that morning, party flashbacks another possible.

Some people have been saying it for ages and indeed it is starting to look that way; “the truth lies in Mountain Brook”.

“Whatley advised that Edward Kissle (or Kissel) appeared on the news claiming to have seen Holloway on the beach Sunday night but later changed his story.”

I didn't say that, Madison Whatley did in her FBI statement. So why exactly would Kissle change his highly significant initial report? Was it the same reason Lee lied on AMW about being in bed? It has been widely asserted that the tripmates were “coached” after they returned and Lee's FBI statement dated 1/6/05 and the Kissle quote look like a couple that got away.

Our own flashback

What I am proposing here is that Natalee went swimming off the shore of the Holiday Inn while she was inebriated. Her classmate saw her swim out into the ocean. It was not a short swim. She felt comfortable in the salt water. The tide was going out. When she turned and tried to return to shore, she could not overcome the tug of the tide pulling her seaward. The tide and then the entrainment force of the current took her farther seaward. Her friends called often to tell her to not swim so far out, but she could not yell for help. She was too far out, struggling in the water and inebriated.

Her friends, realizing the desperateness of the situation, failed to assist her. Some may have swam out, but realized how far she was, chose wiser and returned to shore.

How would they explain this to anyone? So, they decided to cover it up. They removed whatever clothing she took to the shore and discarded it.

In this scenario, we must rely on Roshomon responses and a conspiracy from a number of the Kingdom of Mountain Brook students. Also, from what I have learned from the Caribbean currents, the currents are erratic and subject to random eddy effects. That means that the possibility exists that an abnormally strong current could have exerted effects closer to shore that evening in question. If this is in fact the case, then it could explain how Natalee got entrained by a current so close to shore. Remember, all witnesses claimed that they feared for the distance the person swam from shore.

To All:

After reviewing the persuasive, beach-entrainment theory on the Aussie site, I believe I can piece together what happened the night that Natalee Holloway disappeared.

As our readers can follow from my prior comments, textual analysis of the suspects statements (Joran van der Sloot & the Kalpoe brothers) posted on Sacred Monkeys blog, I induced that alcohol poinsoning succumbed Natalee Holloway in the backseat of Deepak Kalpoe's car some 15-30 minutes after they left Carlos & Charlie's. This alcohol poisoning was of Natalee's own accord and nothing orchestrated by Joran & the Kalpoe brothers. I believe the FBI statements, revealed on another blog and reproduced on this site in our archives, attest to Natalee's alcohol consumption during the day and evening of her disappearance.

Now, if the alcohol poisoning left Natalee in a severe inebriated state, such that she was coming in and out of consciousness when prompted by Joran van der Sloot, then what can be discerned by Joran's and Deepak's statements is what transpired.

Deepak & Satish did drop off Natalee in Joran's arms behind the Marriott Hotel. Joran carried (or grossly-assisted walking) Natalee to the beach. Clearly, she was severely inebriated ... a symptom of alcohol poisoning. Joran could not revive Natalee from her slumber. After staying with her for an hour or so in order to allow her time to revive, Natalee did not. Actually, she might have even died. I suspect that she did.

Rather than following my earlier scenario in which the suspects (Joran & Kalpoe brothers) immolated Natalee on a later date, if the tide and wind conditions were as the Aussie site researched, then all Joran had to do was to set Natalee adrift in the Marriott Beach waters. The tide would take her to sea. A boat would not have been required.

This scenario follows with Joran claiming in his statements that he left Natalee one meter from the shoreline.

Two detractors:

1) Dutch tide experts claim the eddy currents around the island of Aruba would entrain Natalee's body back to the Aruban shoreline, unless she was deposited in the ocean over a kilometer and half from shore. The Aussie site provides a counterclaim. Given the statements of the suspects, juxtaposed with the Aussie research, I believe the Aussie research has tipped the scales in favor of an entrainment to sea.

2) I do not believe that Joran acquired a death certificate, before he set Natalee adrift ... although I believe Joran was convinced that Natalee was stone-cold dead, before he set her adrift. However, if he did get a doctor's concurrence that Natalee was dead, then I suspect that his father did get involved ... giving rise to the sudden reversal & negation of the awarded damages decreed by the Dutch appeals court.

The Aussie site has updated some compelling updates concerning the beach conditions on the night that Natalee disappeared. If we match Joran's story of leaving her on the beach, approximately one meter from the water's edge and add that Natalee was inebriated (I'm being polite), the Aussie site has advanced a more persuasive argument for Natalee being washed out to sea. (Also, just add some assistance to Natalee becoming adrift!)

I thank Harry for his kind remarks about this work.

We can be pretty sure that Natalee was at the Huts. At the shoreline half of the surroundings are land, which seems to have been searched within an inch of its life, the other half sea, which has been searched but much less extensively than the land. This alone opens the real possibility of totally disappearing by accident, without any assistance.

While Beth is “absolutely” certain that Natalee was raped and murdered (specifically by J2K), it is equally possible that she drowned by accident all on her own.

Traumatic events are ... well, traumatic. And witnessing a death is about as traumatic as it gets.

It simply beggars credulity that three young guys with no criminal history could even witness a death, and remain staunch despite falling out.

Could 17-year-old Joran, alone, witness Natalee's death (never mind launching her to sea to cover it up for no apparent reason) and still maintain normal behaviour from 2:40am that morning, through months of prison and intense questioning?

The simple fact is that very few guilty parties can withstand this sort of pressure for even a few hours, days at most. There are exceptions, but not a young man with no criminal history who has murdered a stranger, less so if she died by her own actions and he only disposed of her body.

It is his total lack of apparent trauma combined with any sort of developed cover story that suggests to me that Joran didn't witness a death that morning.

What is very curious is that the only person showing signs of trauma is Lee Broughton next morning, and later saying she suffers “flashbacks” triggered by party environments.

Her public statements have been that she was tucked up in bed, yet the room keyswipes gave us the first clue to what was contained in her FBI statement. We can now be sure that she was returning to the room around just before the 3:22am keyswipe, and that she may have been line-of-sight to the Huts, beach, and sea at that time.

This is information is availble today in all major newspaper and some additional information that was not transmitted last night on TV.

* Dompig wants the friends and schoolfriend to break their silence. At least would have important information, a piece of the puzzle that might gear the investigation to a closure. These students can always call the police in Aruba.

* The ALE never had the chance to exclude the student from their invstigations since they left before the investigation could begin and the information the FBI got from them was not as detailed and they want it to be today.

I'm therefore still more inclined towards Harry's earlier thoughts in January (quoted above); that Joran had no idea that Natalee was in trouble until the driveway confrontation the following night; but that Lee (and/or Ruth) know something significant about when and how Natalee actually disappeared that morning.

At this point the facts that still don't fit are the two post-3am keyswipes, and it seems that only Lee can explain them.

Pure Flight of Fantasy

So if it was just a simple tragic holiday drowning, pure misadventure, what the hell has all this fuss been about?

Some think it's Beth's ego, or lining her pocket, and sundry others variously unkind.

Call me a crackpot conspiracy theorist, or just a cynic that has been watching world events for a long time.

All this hoo-har, spin, and fabrication makes some sort of sense to someone, even of only in the deranged mind of one woman.

But it also seemed to make some sort of sense to a number of fairly heavy-weight Alabamans who later proved to have some murky and moody connections.

Clearly Jossy saw in it a chance to further at least two interests - a change of government in Aruba, and revenge on Aruban Law Enforcement in the form of the van de Sloots.

Two key words are Chavez and oil.

Aruba is right on his doorstep, and potentially sitting on its own oilfield. Now something much bigger comes into play - American strategic interests.

Ideally America would like Aruba as a permanent aircraft carrier right on Chavez's doormat, and a new oilfield wouldn't hurt either, supplying an excuse to defend the interests of American oil companies undoubtedly exploiting it.

And those oil companies in the American South would already be aware of the potential, and the very considerable risk of operating under a foreign government in such close proximity to an unfriendly government. One strong message throughout this case has been that Aruba would be better off under American law (and implicitly American rule).

These interests would like to deal with a compliant like-minded government in Aruba, i.e. corruptable (or in more polite terms, a “client” state).

So we have an alignment of interests from the State Department, CIA, FBI, through American oil and financial interests, to Jossy and his political cohorts keen to advance their own interest, some of dubious ethics and legality, and a missing white girl with a manipuable mother turns up.

The CIA has form for using irregulars, people who operate in a murky world between legititmate business, part-time agent, and part organised crime (o.n.o.).

While there are some signs of pre-planning, or at least some expectation Natalee might try a runner for some reason such as domestic disharmony, I think it was mostly opportunistic exploitation of an emerging situation.

The very first “how do you contact the Aruba police?” posts to the net by family associates where already in full spin. And up to the driveway confrontation 24 hours later the family investigation was on a roll, couldn't do anything wrong.

Then the wheels fell off big time.

The MB kids were removed and effectively silenced, a handful like Lee and Ruth later going on TV and telling lies to support the story that would eventually morph into Beth's toxic view in the NY filing.

I have long suspected that Natalee was somehow connected to such a CIA irregular, most obviously Jug in the first instance, and that this triggered a middle-up-and-down response from the associated network, e.g. the DEA agent on the spot, FBI agents the next day and a dozen more before the week's end. Beth would complain that the American representatives where useless, but somebody knew some buttons to press that actually worked.

Jug thought he could “burn Aruba to the ground” if he didn't get his way, that his unofficial connections to authority could do a much better job than anything Aruba could manage. What allowed him such hubris in the situation?

The boycott still remains the dumbest idea ever from Beth's point of view, and has been very obviously counter-productive to Beth's stated ends of finding Natalee. But it makes some sense to broader and much more powerful American interests that want a change of Aruban government.

But if this was the objective, it failed, and having failed it left a number of people frozen in their posture out on a limb, Jossy, pulling Beth's strings, winding her up, and helping her paint herself into a corner.

With Skeeters dead Dr Phil and Co are left holding a smelly bag containing the Skeeters tape (so a fat and secret out-of-court settlement rather than the public apology Deepak really wants).

Cable TV would rather forget about it all and move on to the next Missing White Girl since Beth seems to have become a bit of a liability.

So I'll make a prediction. Some time in the next two years, maybe in the next few months, something will come to light, possibly another FBI 302 from a MB tripmate, that will lead to some sort of resolution.

I continue to think that at least one of the MB'ers, now most likely Lee Broughton, knows something that will cast significant light on this mystery.

At least, I can hope so, but I don't think Natalee's coming home.
