Perseids 2002: Visual observations 12/13 by Marco Langbroek, Biddinghuizen, the Netherlands

Hi all,

We finally did get some clear skies during the Perseid maximum, although not during the whole of the night. I observed together with Koen Miskotte and Casper ter Kuile from our location in Biddinghuizen (the farm of the Appel family). It was some time ago we last had observed here, good to meet this very friendly family again. After a social chat, we were back in the meadow again to prepare for a dark night.

The first part of the night was nice, with Lm at +6.8. We were allowed some 2 hours of clear skies, and we observed a few nice earthgrazers and a nice number of bright ones. Later during the night, clouds intervened and we had to stop. Late in the night we managed to get a short period (0.5 hours) during which the sky opened again, but then were clouded out again.

We saw a bright fireball appear behind the clouds: I saw it start through thin clouds, then disappear behind a thick cloud, and then the rest of the sky was shortly illuminated.... This must have been at least a -6 or something like that...

When twilight already was in progress, the sky suddenly cleared completely again. We did not log the data from that period but did see a nice activity and a couple of bright ones again.

A quick very preliminary look at the data gives quite normal ZHR's of about 80 for the early part of our session (21-23 UTC), and perhaps a bit low ZHR's (~50) for the short 0.5 hour session between 0:50-1:32 UTC (but then, this was a short period only). Below a table with my data. 183 meteors in all of which 147 were Perseids. Although we didn't get a full clear night, it was enjoyable. Maybe tonight for a second round of observing.

- Marco

Perseids 2002: Visual observations 13/14 by Marco Langbroek, Lattrop, the Netherlands

Hi all,

One day late with my report on the night of August 13-14 (see table with data below), the 'after-maximum night'. Our team (Koen, Casper, me) moved eastward to the German-Dutch border area this night, because weather forecasts indicated that clouds might reach the center of the Netherlands before dawn, while the eastern half of the country had better chances for a fully clear night. As it turned out, that was correct, so our decission to move was right. We did enjoy a full night, and a dark night too!!!

After meeting up with Robert Haas (our multistation pattner operating a second photographic and video station from Groesbeek) halfway on our route (in order to exchange some photographic films and video tapes), which was abit of a ...well....uncoordinated action (we spend some time trying to find Robert, and he spend some time trying to find us, along the highway....), we arrived at the observatory of Lattrop and were welcomed by Arnold Tukkers, who would observe part of the night with us.

The sky was very dark with an impressive milky way. From the parking lot, I saw a nive bright sporadic descend slowly and 'flickering' towards the horizon. Quite some Perseids appeared to. We helped Casper to put some films into his camera's and then we were off to the observing field.

We started at 22:10 UTC, with Lm at +6.9!!! Later during the night some thin low ground fog would develop over the fields, which had the effect that the Lm dropped a few tens to 6.7-6.6.

We noted a nice number of meteors, amongst which quite some Perseids. A full night after the maximum, the show was still very entertaining! We did not see anything brighter than about -2/-3 however. Still, we certainly will have some photographic hits from this night. I ended up with 224 meteors, of which were 143 Perseids, in 3.42h effective observing time. I highly enjoyed this very dark night!

- minute countings : Perseid rates went up to 5 stream members. Regular 2 or 3 minutes without observing one single Perseid.
- yellow was the most observed colour.
- 39.5 % left a persistent train.
- Fog made an end of the observing session at 02.18 UT. What a pity.Normally we can observe here until 03.00 UT.

- Increasing Perseid activity. Hourly rates above 10 stream members in one hour ; this translates in a ZHR of 17. Spectacular meteors ! Most notably were two Perseid point meteors.
- Moderate sporadic rates this night ; except the first interval. Low apex activity.
- I observed no members of the Kappa Cygnids.

Long trains and up to the Perseid maximum !!

REMARKS:

- This night we were in the middle (in the eye) of a low pressure system. Skies were great (almost as 8-9 august) but there were also many clouds (AC and Ci). No fog this night. I took a break between 22.40 - 22.50 UT (clouds...). After the two official intervals, I kept on looking through some holes until 02.00 UT with following results : 12 Perseids (7 members with ~) and 10 sporadics.
- Increasing Perseid activity : ZHR 20.
- Most notably : an Aquarid earth grazer at 22.17 UT.
- For the first time this season : a simultaneous pair of Perseids at 00.03 UT (Mag +3 and +2 with ~).

Long trains and up to the Perseid maximum !!

Perseids 2002: IMO Shower Circular, Rainer Arlt

Nearly moon-free conditions permitted numerous valuable observations of the nights around the Perseid maximum. The peak time was 22h30 UT on August 12 if a solar long- itude of 140.0 degrees is assumed. This time favoured European sites, but large parts of central Europe suf- fered from clouds and rain around August 12.

We present a first activity curve of the 2002 Perseids based on the reports of 140 observers from 30 countries as listed below. The averages include only observing periods with a total correction smaller than 8.0 and radiant elevations higher than 10 degrees. Since a number of new observers contributed to the profile, we made use of perception factors based on the total sporadic activity for all individuals. Details about the analysis will be found in an updated article in the October issue of WGN, the Journal of the IMO. This first curve was obtained with a constant populatsion index of r=2.0 and no correc- tions for the radiant elevation hR other than sin(hR).

The maximum of the 2002 Perseids falls near a solar longitude of 140.0 (eq. J2000.0), although the curve actually exhibits a plateau between 139.9 and 140.16 when ZHRs exceeded 80. Peak rates are about ZHR = 90 +-5. This result makes the 2002 Perseids a typical return, and the early peak seen in 1988-1999 does not appear or might at best be the (hardly significant) enhancement at sol=139.91.

Perseids 2002: Koen (left) and his sun Lars (right) working at the computers measuring photo-CD images of the Sino-Dutch Leonid 2001 expedition to China using Marc de Lignie's AstroRecord program

Perseids 2002: From left to right on this picture are Koen Miskotte, Casper ter Kuile and Carl Johannink. Koen and Casper visited Carl in Gronau on 10 august while it was raining "cats and dogs" the whole day. Observations seemed far away at this moment but the next day our changes became better!
