These pages are on the cultivation and taxonomy of plants of the genus Cryptocoryne (Araceae).

Updates are made at irregular intervals

Cryptocoryne nevillii
was misunderstood for more than half a century. It was 1976 that Jacobsen proved the identity of the shortly before by Nicolson recollected plant from Batticaloa, Sri Lanka. Plants from the Faden localiy are still in cultivation by Peter Babics and proved to be easy to grow in beech tree (Fagus sp.) soil.

Cryptocoryne dewitii
recollected!
Almost 40 years after its discovery, Takashige Idei (JP) was able to find the plant at its type locality near Kiunga, PNG. It proved to be very difficult to find it, he told, and not without risks. He got a bite of a poisonous snake and had to help himself and stayed the night over in the forest.
He brought beautiful pictures, the first ever seen! Enjoy!

This yet unnamed Cryptocoryne species from the Mekong river shows the transition from normal leaves to terete (spike form) leaves. In a few weeks the plant shed its leaves, probably as an adaptation to submersed growth.
The Mekong river has a lot of surprises for the Crypts lover. An update of the C. crispatula var. sinensis page is available

In the past few years, new plants from Atjeh, Sumatra collected by Suwidji Wongso, show more variation in C. pontederiifolia. And moreover, it is remarkable that the distribution of C. pontederiifolia now overlaps the known distribution of C. moehlmannii. More accessions are very welcome!

The opening of the limb of the spathe of a Cryptocoryne occurs - in my experience almost always - at night. In a first attempt to document it, I made a setup with Cryptocoryne ciliata because of it grows in relative dry air, and had the camera installed with an interval timer set at a two minute interval and flashlight for the whole evening and night.
The movie shows 20 (out of 700) images, so what you see is a 40 minute event. Note how fast it goes!
