Olympia Haarlem third to reach Play-Offs
Nederlands
ALKMAAR / VLEUTEN / ROSMALEN / HAARLEM (Neth.) - FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem became the third team to qualify for this years Play-Offs after winning its double-header at Alcmaria Victrix. Last Monday, Hotel Ambassador Haarlem Terrasvogels became the second team to reach the Play-Offs after Oolders Omaco Sparks Haarlem was the first two weeks ago.

The fourth place is currently taken by UVV, which leads fifth placed Alcmaria Victrix by only two points (one game). As of now, these two teams appeared to be the prime candidates for the fourth and final place in the Play-Offs. But who will finish in fourth place might not be decided before the very last day in the regular season on September 13 when UVV and Alcmaria Victrix meet each other in a double-header.

Coming weekend, the last games are scheduled in the regular season, which then will be interrupted until the end of August. The season then resumes again on September 6. The Netherlands National Softball Team will be in Illinois (USA) in July to prepare for the World Championship, which will be held August 15-24 in Haarlem (Netherlands). Between the return from the States and the opening of the Championship, the Dutch squad will play a series of ten games throughout the country. To fill the gap, seven of the eight big league-teams wil participate in the Summer League, which opens op June 28 and ends on August 9. The lone team not participating is Oolders Omaco Sparks Haarlem, as it is expected that the majority of its team will be selected for the National Team. As Sparks Haarlem cannot field a representative team during the absence of these players, it has withdrawn from the Summer League.

Today, FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem won twice at Alcmaria Victrix, both shutouts. The opener was one with a 3-0 score. With the win, the team officially qualified for the Play-Offs. Winning pitcher Lindsey Meadows gave up only three hits. Olympia Haarlem won its second game with an 11-0 shutout. Olympia collected eight hits, including three by Lindsey Meadows, who doubled twice and had four runs batted in., while scoring two herself.

Reigning champion Hotel Ambassador Haarlem Terrasvogels registered two comfortable victories against UVV. In the opener, Terrasvogels won 12-1. Femke van Dusschoten gave up only one basehit and struckout 10 batters, while Gabi Obia scored four runs for Terrasvogels. The second game was won, 10-2, highlighted by a 5-run rally in the third inning. Terrasvogels collected 12 basehits, including four by Britt Vonk, who hit her fifth homerun of the season and only missed the double to 'hit-for-the-cycle'. She scored twice and had five runs batted in.

Oolders Omaco Sparks Haarlem won twice vs. DSS. In the opener, Sparks Haarlem rallied for nine runs in the second inning and went on to win 13-0. Karin Tuk contributed with four runs batted in. In Game 2, the team couldn't take that much distance off of Quincey Catsburg and led only 2-0 after four innings. Sparks Haarlem went on to win 4-0. DSS collected only one basehit, which was hit by Morgan Sampson with two outs in the home of the seventh inning off of reliever Rebecca Soumeru, who had taken over for Dagmar Bloeming in the sixth. Bloeming allowed only one batter to reach base in five innings, which was via an one-out walk in the second inning, but Sparks Haarlem then turned a double play. Sparks Haarlem hit nine basehits, including three by Nathalie Timmermans, all three doubles.

Gryphons and Centrals split their double-header. Centrals won the opener, 4-2 and was leading 3-0 after three innings. Winning pitcher Whitney Johnson struckout 13 batters. In Game 2, Gryphons won big, 11-1 on nine basehits, including three by Mariëlle Vleugels, who doubled and tripled. Almost all runs scored by Gryphons were thanks to Vleugels, contributed with seven runs batted in, while scoring two herself. Winning pitcher Emma Holden struckout seven and gave up only two hits.
