Pioniers' previous game

NIJMEGEN (Neth.) - The 20th edition of the annual Jan van de Vegte Memorial Tournament in Nijmegen opened with a surprise, as host De Hazenkamp, which plays in the Second Division, won 4-2 vs. Konica Minolta Pioniers, which last season played in the final for the Dutch championship title. This game was followed by two more on the first day. Next, Mr. Cocker HCAW played vs. MediaMonks RCH, followed by the match-up RCH and De Hazenkamp.

Pioniers failed to be agressive and left twelve runners behind in six innings, including the bases loaded three times. Seven of the stranded runners were in scoring position. Initially, Pioniers opened the score in the first inning. With one out, Mervin Gario singled, then stole second base. After Glenn Romney walked, Gario scored on a single by Jourick Blanco, then the bases were loaded when Mark Duursma also walked. However, Pioniers, failed to add more runs, as Norbert Lokhorst popped up for an infield-fly, then Jeffrey de Vrieze struckout.

After Hazenkamp-starter Robbert Vos retired the side in the second inning, he was supported with four runs on seven basehits by his teammates in the home half of the at bat. First, Paul Sabel, who is also one of the coaches of the team, led off with a homerun to tie the score. With one out, Pionier-starter Jurrian Koks (who last year was on the roster of ADO) gave up three consecutive singles to Bas Langenhuizen, Mark Fink and Erik van Zomeren to put De Hazenkamp ahead. Next, a force play-grounder by Steffen Vos followed, but then Fink scored when Koks balked. After Roy Kamoen singled, another run was scored when Mark Schonenberg also singled. The bases were loaded when Koks also gave up a single to Dylan Kamoen, but then the inning ended when Sabel grounded out.

Pioniers got one run back in the third inning. Mervin Gario led off with a single, advanced to third on an one-out single by Jourick Blanco and scored on a single by Mark Duursma, but then a double play followed. In the fourth inning, Pioniers left three runners behind. With one out, two errors and a stolen base put runners on second and third base, but then lead-runner Joey Treurniet was thrown out at the plate on a grounder towards first base. The bases were loaded after a walk, but then Glenn Romney struckout to end the inning.

In the fifth inning, Garrelt Klaassen became De Hazenkamp's new pitcher. Pioniers again got on base, but stranded two runners, then left the bases loaded again in the sixth. With two outs, Mervin Gario was hit by a pitch, then reached third on a single by Glenn Romney, who advanced on a passed ball. Jourick Blanco was walked intentionally, loading the bases, but Mark Duursma flied out, ending the inning and the game.
