Another Dutch player assigned to Spring Training-game

PEORIA, Arizona (USA) - On Friday (March 27), another professional player with the Dutch nationality was assigned to be with a Spring Training-game.

Outfielder Denzel Richardson was added as an additional minor league-player to Friday-evening's game of the Colorado Rockies against the San Diego Padres, together with Dominican outfielder Wilson Soriano.

Richardson turned 21 on January 7. Unlike most other Dutch professional players he was not born on Curaçao or Aruba, but in Phillipsburg on the island of St. Martin, which is one of the six Caribbean/Antilian islands that are part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

Richardson made his professional debut in 2012 when he played in 35 games for the DSL Rockies, the Rookie League-team of the Rockies in the Dominican Summer League. There, he batted .211 (23-for-109), scored 13 runs and batted in eight.

In 2013, he played in 39 games again for the Rookie-squad of the Rockies in the Dominican Republic. This time, Richardson batted .256 (32-for-125), scored 18 runs and batted in 18, while hitting five homeruns.

Last year, Richardson played in 22 games for the Grand Junction Rockies, another Rookie League-team of the Rockies in the Pioneer League. He batted .213 (17-for-80), scored 12 runs and batted in seven. Also last year, he promoted to Single-A Short Season, playing in 18 games for Tri-City Dust Devils in the Northwest League. Playing for this team, Richardson batted .200 (12-for-60), scored seven runs and batted in six, while hitting one homerun.

Last year, Richardson played in one game for the Rockies during Spring Training.

The Rockies played against at the Padres on Friday-evening at the Peoria Sports Complex, which is shared by the Padres and Seattle Mariners.

The Rockies lost 7-5, but Richardson didn't play in the game, while Rosario entered the game in the sixth as new centerfielder.

14 players with a Dutch passport have now played in this years Spring Training. They are Infielder Ozhaino Albies, Infielder Andrelton Simmons (both Atlanta Braves), Outfielder Roger Bernadina, Pitcher Jair Jurrjens (both Colorado Rockies), Infielder Xander Bogaerts (Boston Red Sox), Infielder Carlton Daal (Cincinnati Reds), Infielder Didi Gregorius (New York Yankees), Catcher Spencer Kieboom, Outfielder Randolph Oduber (both Washington Nationals), Infielder Juremi Profar (Texas Rangers), Infielder Jonathan Schoop, Infielder Sharlon Schoop (both Baltimore Orioles), Infielder Hainley Statia (Milwaukee Brewers) and Catcher Shawn Zarraga (Los Angeles Dodgers).

Besides these 14, six other Dutch players were or are with big league-teams during Spring Training, but didn't play. Catcher Chad Tromp (Cincinnati Reds), Infielder Gianfranco Wawoe (Seattle Mariners), Catcher Sherman Lacrus (Texas Rangers) and Denzel Richardson (Colorado Rockies) were assigned to a Major League-game of their respective organization, but didn't play. Pitcher Kenley Jansen (Los Angeles Dodgers) and infielder Jurickson Profar (Texas Rangers) are on 40-man rosters, but are currently sidelined with injuries.

Bogaerts, Gregorius, Jonathan Schoop and Simmons are also on 40-man rosters.
