Kinheim overwhelms Pioniers and moves into 2nd place
Nederlands
HAARLEM (Neth.) - On a cloudy and windy Tuesday-evening (June 2), Vaessen Pioniers and Corendon Kinheim faced each other in a make-up game in the Pim Mulier Stadium in Haarlem, two days after the match-up was cancelled due to rain in Hoofddorp.

When the game was cancelled on Sunday after three postponements, it was announced that the home site of Pioniers was not available for a make-up game in the following week, due to maintenance to the infield. Possible options were the nearby sites of L&D Amsterdam Pirates (Amsterdam), RCH-Pinguïns (Heemstede) or DSS (Haarlem). However, there were make-up games scheduled in Amsterdam and Heemstede, while DSS had a practice scheduled for its main squad. It is not known whether other sites were considered, but the Pim Mulier Stadium of opponent Kinheim appeared to be no option for the home-playing Pioniers. In the end, the game was scheduled to be played in the stadium in Haarlem after all.

Another point of discussion was the day on which the game was re-scheduled. Coming weekend, there are no games scheduled in the big league, which was a possible option. According to league-regulations, a game has to be made up on the Tuesday following the cancellation. Besides that, coming Saturday and Sunday are not labeled as make-up days, just days off. Another possibility was to re-schedule the game on the same day that L&D Amsterdam Pirates and Curaçao Neptunus would make up their rained out game of last Friday. That game, as well as the Pioniers vs. Kinheim-game, are decisive to determine which team will be the second to qualify for the Play-Offs in the first half of the competition. Pirates and Neptunus were unable to play this week, due to their particpation in the European Cup Tournaments. And so, their game was tentatively re-scheduled for next Tuesday, June 9.

But the decisions were made and so, on a very windy Tuesday-evening, Pioniers hosted Kinheim in the Pim Mulier Stadium. Kinheim needed to win to stay in contention for the Play-Off spot, while Pioniers was eliminated in the weekend. Kinheim overwhelmed the Hoofddorp-squad, whacked 26 basehits and won 22-5 in a 7-inning, mercy-rule game to complete a 3-game sweep.

Kinheim now has to wait for the result of the Amsterdam vs. Neptunus make-up game. When Amsterdam wins, it will qualify, when Neptunus wins, Kinheim will qualify.

Kevin Moesquit led the Kinheim-attack with five basehits (5-for-5) and only missed the triple to hit for-the-cycle. He reached base six times, while Jochem Koedijk (3-for-3) reached five times.

All nine players in the Kinheim batting order scored at least once, had at least one basehit and had at least one run batted in.
Eight players scored two or more runs, led by Moesquit and Sven van de Sanden, who scored four.
Eight players had two or more basehits and four players had three or more RBI's, also led by Moesquit, who had five.

The 22 runs were the most scored in one game since Kinheim scored 26 on August 18, 2013 against ADO Lakers in 26-0 win. That came a week after Pioniers had scored 27 runs also against ADO Lakers in a 27-0 shutout.

For-the-record, in both 20-plus run-games of Kinheim, Martijn Bosschaart was one of the umpires. In 2013, he was behind the plate, tonight, he was at first base.

The 26 hits of Kinheim are the most since L&D Amsterdam Pirates collected 25 on August 1, 2013 in a 22-3 win vs. UVV. Four days earlier, Pioniers had hit 24 basehits in a 24-0 shutout vs. HCAW.

For-the-record, in the above mentioned two games and tonight's game, Efrem Silvania was one of the umpires. In the Pirates-game, he was at first base, in the Pioniers-game, he was behind the plate, as he was tonight. Henny Jansen, who was the 3B umpire tonight, was also at 3B during the Pirates-UVV game in 2013. By the way, that game lasted 2 hours and 21 minutes, only one minute shorter than tonight. One player of the 2013, 25-hit game, also played in tonight's game, being Kevin Weijgertse. Two years ago, he was at the winning side, playing at first base for Pirates, tonight, he was in the losing team, playing at 3rd base for Pioniers.

The 26 basehits are the most hit by Kinheim, at least since 2001. Since then, the Haarlem-squad collected 20 basehits in five games.

(June 2)

While Pioniers led 2-1 after the first inning, the tone was set on the very first pitch of the game. In the top of the first inning, Kevin Moesquit connected well on the first pitch of starting pitcher Elton Koeiman and the ball disappeared over the left-centerfield fence for a homerun.

In the bottom of the first inning, Pioniers answered with two runs off of Tom Stuifbergen, who made his first start since May 7, when he left earlier to a knee-injury. With one out, Dirk van 't Klooster reached on an error and Danny Rombley singled. A single by Quintin De Cuba then tied the score and a following sacrifice fly by Mark-Jan Moorman gave Pioniers a 2-1 lead.

That lead was very brief, as Kinheim rallied for six runs in the second at bat. Dashenko Ricardo led off with a single and scored the tying run on a passed ball. Singles by Sven van de Sanden, Kevin Moesquit and Bryan Engelhardt (2-run) and a wild pitch gave Kinheim a 7-2 lead.

Pioniers got two runs back in its second inning. Kevin Dirksen led off with a single and Kevin Weijgertse doubled, then the two scored on grounders by Glenn Bakker and Max Draijer.

Kinheim then staged two more big rallies, scoring seven runs in the fourth and eight in the sixth inning.

In the fourth inning, Kinheim registered nine basehits, including two by Kevin Moesquit and Jochem Koedijk. The latter led off with a single and Moesquit then singled, followed by a runscoring grounder by Mervin Gario. Hereafter, Bryan Engelhardt hit a 2-run homerun, which led to the first pitching change. Reggie Bomberg took over, but he gave up six more basehits, including an RBI-double by Jeffrey Arends and runscoring singles by Victor Draijer, Jochem Koedijk and Kevin Moesquit.

Leading 14-4, Kinheim then rallied for eight runs in the sixth and that turned the game into a more-or-less humiliating affair. After 12 batters stepped up to the plate in the fourth, 14 batted in the sixth. This time, six hits were registered. With Sven van de Sanden (walk) and Jochem Koedijk (double) on base, Kevin Moesquit needed just a triple to complete the cycle, but instead, he batted a 2-run single, then scored himself on a following double by Mervin Gario. With one out, Dudley Leonora delivered a runscoring single, which led to another pitching change. Lefthander Taylor Clemensia took over and walked Jeffrey Arends, then gave up a 3-run homerun to Dashenko Ricardo. Hereafter, the bases got loaded with two outs. Second baseman Daniel Fernandes then became the new pitcher and he walked Gario, which made it a 22-5 score.

Some of tonight's basehits might be contributed to a strong wind that blew in from behind home plate. A few fly balls or pop-ups changed direction and ended up as basehits. However, most basehits were just clean basehits, including down the foul-lines. Pioniers made no errors in the game and that resulted in the rare feat that all 22 runs were earned.

After Pioniers had narrowed the deficit to 7-4 in the second inning, it came into scoring position again in the fifth. With one out, Dirk van 't Klooster reached on an infield-hit and that means, he now needs only one basehit to become the first player in Dutch big league-history with 1200 career basehits. Danny Rombley followed with a double, but the two were left behind.

In the seventh inning, off of David Bergman (who had taken over in the sixth), Pioniers scored its fifth run. Max Draijer led off with a double, moved on a flyout, then scored on a grounder by Van 't Klooster. A pop-fly then ended the inning and the game, which didn't had much to do with big league-baseball, except for raising some batting averages.
