Neptunus wins regular season; qualifies for European Cup

BUSSUM / AMSTERDAM / HAARLEM / DORDRECHT (Neth.) - DOOR Neptunus today (Saturday, August 9) trailed 3-2 after seven innings vs. Mr. Cocker HCAW, then scored three runs in the eighth inning to win 5-3. With the victory, Neptunus claimed first place in the overall standings of the regular season. And with that, Neptunus earned the home advantage of six games in the 9-game Play-Offs, which opens next Thursday. By finishing in first place, Neptunus also qualified for participation of next years European Cup Tournament. The second Dutch representative in this event will be the winner of the Holland Series, which is the Dutch champion. In case Neptunus also wins the Series, the losing team of the final will become the second participant in the EC-tournament.

At Bussum, in the eighth, Neptunus got the bases loaded, then Tom de Blok was brought in as new pitcher by HCAW. He was greeted with a 2-run single by Dwayne Kemp, that gave Neptunus a 4-3 lead. A sacrifice fly by Adrian Anthony then made it 5-3.

At Amsterdam, L&D Amsterdam Pirates finished in second place. The team led 3-0 after five innings vs. Vaessen Pioniers, which then rallied for five runs in the sixth inning. A 2-run single by Danny Rombley and 2-run homerun by Vince Rooi highlighted the at bat. Amsterdam came alongside in the home of the sixth on a 2-run double by Bas de Jong. Pioniers went on to win 6-5 in 10 innings on a sac-fly by Mark-Jan Moorman.

At Haarlem, Corendon Kinheim suffered a big 11-2 loss vs. UVV, which collected 14 basehits, including three by Gilmer Lampe and Jirka Bliek. UVV rallied for seven runs in the seventh inning, which included a 2-run homerun by Mike Bazuin. Tom Stuifbergen, who is recovering from an injury, made his first appearance on the mound for Kinheim. The righthander started, but only threw the first inning.

At Dordrecht, Mampaey The Hawks and ADO Lakers took turns in taking the lead, but in the end ADO Lakers won 12-9. ADO Lakers collected 15 hits, including four by Christian Diaz, who homered twice and also had four RBI's and scored three runs.
